John Aiken (hockey Player)
John Judson Aiken (January 1, 1932 – November 2, 2021) was an American ice hockey goaltender. He played one game for the Montreal Canadiens in the National Hockey League during the 1957–1958 season. Aiken was spectating at the Canadiens versus Boston Bruins match on March 13, 1958, when Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante was seriously injured during the second period. Aiken, who was the Bruins' practice goaltender, was called out of the crowd to take Plante's place. Aiken made twelve saves and allowed six goals in a 7–3 Boston victory. Goaltender
In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as the goalie) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. The goaltender mostly plays in or near the area in front of the net called the ''Ice hockey rink#Crease, goal crease'' (often referred to simply as '' the crease''). Goaltenders tend to stay at or beyond the top of the crease to cut down on the angle of shots. In the modern age of goaltending there are two common styles, butterfly and hybrid (hybrid is a mix of the traditional stand-up style and butterfly technique). Because of the power of shots, the goaltender wears special equipment to protect the body from direct impact.
