John A. McShane
John Albert McShane (August 25, 1850 – November 10, 1923) was an American Democratic Party politician. He was the first Democrat to be elected to the United States House of Representatives from Nebraska. McShane was born in New Lexington, Ohio, on August 25, 1850. In 1871, he moved to the Wyoming Territory, and in 1874 he moved to Omaha, Nebraska. He started out in the livestock business but eventually became a director of the First National Bank of Omaha. McShane was elected to the Nebraska state house of representatives in 1880 and to the state senate in 1882, serving there until 1886. That year he ran for and won the seat in Nebraska's 1st congressional district, serving in the Fiftieth United States Congress from March 4, 1887, to March 3, 1889. In 1888, he ran for Governor of Nebraska but lost the election to John Milton Thayer. After retirement McShane worked against the right of women to vote. Nebraska () is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. John Milton Thayer
John Milton Thayer (January 24, 1820March 19, 1906) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and a postbellum United States Senator from Nebraska. Thayer served as Governor of Wyoming Territory and Governor of Nebraska. Thayer was born in Bellingham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He attended and taught in rural schools. He graduated from Brown University in 1841, and established a practice in Worcester, Massachusetts. Thayer was the editor of the Worcester Magazine and the Historical Journal. Thayer served as a lieutenant in the local militia company before deciding to move with his family to the West. He was married to Mary Torrey Allen on December 27, 1842, and they had six children. The governor of Nebraska is the head of government of the U.S. state of Nebraska as provided by the fourth article of the Constitution of Nebraska. The officeholder is elected to a four-year term, with elections held two years after presidential elections. The governor may be elected any number of times, but not more than twice in a row. The Men's Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage was an American organization active in the 1910s that was Anti-suffragism, opposed to legal voting by women and open exclusively to men. It was made up of loosely affiliated state and local chapters which typically existed for less than a year, the duration of a campaign against a state referendum proposing women's suffrage. The Association argued that voting should be restricted to white men of high social class. These arguments relied upon traditional gender roles presenting women as naturally unsuited to leadership. State chapters were well financed and run by prominent men, including wealthy bankers and members of United States Congress, Congress. Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote in elections. Beginning in the start of the 18th century, some people sought to change voting laws to allow women to vote. Liberal political parties would go on to grant women the right to vote, increasing the number of those parties' potential constituencies. National and international organizations formed to coordinate efforts towards women voting, especially the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (founded in 1904 in Berlin, Germany). Many instances occurred in recent centuries where women were selectively given, then stripped of, the right to vote.
