Johannes Van Dam
Johannes van Dam (Amsterdam 9 October 1946 - Amsterdam 18 September 2013) was a Dutch journalist and the country's best-known writer on food. Van Dam wrote a regular column on food for the national daily ''Het Parool'' for almost 25 years. Van Dam studied medicine and psychology and worked in the newspaper business from 1967 to 1981 (for ''Het Vrije Volk'' and ''Haagse Post''), before running a cookbook store in Amsterdam, in 1983. In 1986 he started writing a column on food for the Dutch weekly ''Elsevier'', and in 1989 sold the bookstore and began writing full-time, for ''Het Parool'' and the Belgian daily ''De Morgen'' in addition to ''Elsevier''. He published a book on food, ''De Dikke Van Dam'', in 2005. He died in an Amsterdam hospital in 2013 after suffering for some time from health problems, including diabetes. ''Het Parool'' () is an Amsterdam-based daily newspaper. It was first published on 10 February 1941 as a resistance paper during the German occupation of the Netherlands (1940–1945). In English, its name means ''The Password'' or ''The Motto''. History Second World War The paper was preceded by a stenciled newsletter which was started in May 1940 by Frans Goedhart. In late 1940, Wim van Norden joined the group of producers of the newsletter; Van Norden would later serve as director of the newspaper between 1945 and 1979. Jaap Nunes Vaz also became involved with the newspaper. In 1944, the paper, albeit illegal and vigorously persecuted, reached a circulation of approximately 100,000, and it was distributed by the Dutch resistance. Het Vrije Volk
''Het Vrije Volk'' was a Dutch social-democratic daily newspaper. It was the successor, after World War II, of the socialist daily '' Het Volk''. The paper appeared legally 1 March 1945 in Eindhoven. From 28 January 1946, all subdivisions of the newspaper were united and a national edition was introduced. For a time, it was the biggest newspaper in the Netherlands and at its peak it had over 300 editors and reporters. After 1958, the number of subscribers decreased rapidly. The newspaper disappeared in 1970 as a national newspaper from Amsterdam, only regional editions remained and at the end of 1971 only Rotterdam was its home base. The last edition entitled ''Het Vrije Volk'' appeared on 30 March 1991 and it was merged with the ''Rotterdams Nieuwsblad'' into the ''Rotterdams Dagblad''.
