Johannes King
Johannes King (born: Adiri circa 1830 - 24 October 1898), was the first Maroon missionary, and the first important writer in Sranan Tongo. King belonged to the Matawai tribe, and performed his missionary activities for the Moravian Church. Biography Adiri was born as a son of granman (paramount chief) Kodjo of the Matawai, near the plantations of Haarlem and Maho in Suriname. Adiri was born and raised in a completely illiterate society. In 1852, Adiri moved to Maripaston. During this period, he fell ill, and the illness lasted many years. In 1855, Adiri started to receive visions: a strange god pointed at an alien religion, told him to go to the city, and be baptized. Adiri went to Paramaribo, where he met van Calker, who was the preacher at the Moravian Church. He didn't stay long, and returned to his village soon after. Kampong Baroe
Kampong Baroe ( Javanese: ꦏꦩ꧀ꦥꦸꦁꦧꦫꦸ; Standard Malay: ''Kampung Baru'') is a resort in Suriname, located in the Saramacca District. Its population at the 2012 census was 2,248, the majority being Javanese, and East Indian. The main agricultural crop is peanuts. Kampong Baroe also contains cattle, pig, and chicken farms. "Kampong Baroe" in Malay language literally means "New Village" (Kampong: Village and ''Baru/Baroe'': New). Kampong Baroe has a clinic, and a school. On 23 March 2020, construction of a multi functional centre started. Psalms
The Book of Psalms ( or ; he, תְּהִלִּים, , lit. "praises"), also known as the Psalms, or the Psalter, is the first book of the ("Writings"), the third section of the Tanakh, and a book of the Old Testament. Granman
Granman (Ndyuka language: ''gaanman'') is the title of the paramount chief of a Maroon (people), Maroon nation in Suriname and French Guiana. The Ndyuka people, Ndyuka, Saramaka, Matawai people, Matawai, Aluku, Paramaccan people, Paramaka and Kwinti nations all have a granman. The paramount chiefs of Amerindian peoples in Suriname are nowadays also often called ''granman''. The word comes from the Sranan Tongo language, a Creole language, creole spoken in Suriname, and is derived from ''grand'' + ''man'' meaning "most important man." Henri Frans De Ziel
Henri Frans de Ziel (15 January 1916 – 3 February 1975), working under the pen name of Trefossa, was a neoromantic writer in Dutch language, Dutch and Sranan Tongo from Suriname. He is best known for the Sranan Tongo stanzas of God zij met ons Suriname, Suriname's National Anthem. Biography He was an educator and lived in the Netherlands from 1953 to 1956. Upon his return to Suriname he was part of the editorial staff of the magazines ''Tongoni'' (1958-1959) and ''Soela'' (1962-1964). He also served briefly as the director-librarian of Suriname's Cultural Centre (Cultureel Centrum Suriname (CCS)). He subsequently returned to the Netherlands to work on the publication of Johannes King's memoirs. Trefossa wrote primarily about the beauty of his native country, Suriname, especially as a source of peace to the restless mind. Stoelmanseiland
Stoelmanseiland (or Stoelie) is an island, and a village in the Paramacca resort of the Sipaliwini District. It is located at the confluence of the Tapanahony River with the Lawa River which forms the Marowijne River, and is also the border with French Guiana. Stoelmanseiland was named after Philip Samuel Stoelman who founded a military outpost on the island in December 1791, during his fight against the Aluku. During the Surinamese Interior War it was the headquarters of Ronnie Brunswijk's Jungle Commando. Johannes King Hospital The Moravian Church built the Johannes King Hospital, a medical clinic which opened on 29 May 1958. Winti
Winti is an Afro-Surinamese traditional religion that originated in the colony Suriname, part of the Dutch Empire. It is a syncretization of the different African religious beliefs and practices brought in mainly by Akan and Fon slaves during the slave period. The religion has no written sources, nor a central authority. The term is also used for all supernatural beings or spirits (''Wintis'') created by ''Anana'', the creator of the universe. Huygens Institute For The History Of The Netherlands
The Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands was formed on January 1, 2011 through a merger of the Institute of Dutch History ( nl, 'Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis', ING) a research institute of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, and the Huygens Instituut of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (founded in 1808). Zeist
Zeist () is the capital and largest town of the municipality of Zeist. The town is located in the Utrecht province of the Netherlands, east of the city of Utrecht. History The town of "Seist" was first mentioned in a charter in the year 838. The original settlement was located at the present ''Dorpsstraat''. In the late 12th century, a church was built here. Dutch Orthography
Dutch orthography uses the Latin alphabet. The spelling system is issued by government decree and is compulsory for all government documentation and educational establishments. Legal basis In the Netherlands, the official spelling is regulated by the Spelling Act of 15 September 2005. This came into force on 22 February 2006, replacing the Act on the Spelling of the Dutch Language of 14 February 1947.
