Johannes Forchhammer
Johannes Nicolai Georg Forchhammer (20 March 1827 – 9 July 1909) was a Danish philologist. He was born in Copenhagen as a son of Johan Georg Forchhammer. He was a nephew of August Friedrich Wilhelm Forchhammer. He finished his secondary education in 1843, and completed the cand.philol. degree in 1848. He took the magistratus degree in 1852, and then studied for a period in Italy. He was a part of a Nordic intellectual group here, which included Julius Middelthun, Christoffer Borch, Johan Peter Weisse and Niels Ravnkilde. He worked as a school teacher in Christianshavn from 1848 to 1851, and for a second period after returning from Italy. He also held lectures at the University of Copenhagen. In 1859 he was hired as headmaster at Aalborg Cathedral School. He became a member of the Landsting in 1866, but relinquished the seat in 1868 when he became principal of Aalborg Cathedral School. Christianshavn
Christianshavn (literally, "ingChristian's Harbour") is a neighbourhood in Copenhagen, Denmark. Part of the Indre By District, it is located on several artificial islands between the islands of Zealand and Amager and separated from the rest of the city centre by the Inner Harbour. It was founded in the early 17th century by Christian IV as part of his extension of the fortifications of Copenhagen. Originally, it was laid out as an independent privileged merchant's town with inspiration from Dutch cities but it was soon incorporated into Copenhagen proper. Dominated by canals, it is the part of Copenhagen with the most nautical atmosphere. Johannes Georg Forchhammer
Johannes Georg Forchhammer (22 May 1861 – 23 July 1938) was a Danish physicist and educator. He was born in Aalborg as a son of Johannes Nicolai Georg Forchhammer. He was a brother of teacher Henni Forchhammer and singer Viggo Forchhammer and uncle of theatre director Bjarne Forchhammer. He was a grandson of Johan Georg Forchhammer and grandnephew of August Friedrich Wilhelm Forchhammer. He finished his secondary education at Herlufsholm School in 1880, and took the polytechnical examination in chemistry in 1885. He was an assistant at the Carlsberg Laboratory from 1885 to 1886, and from 1886 to 1891 he taught at the Metropolitan School and the Royal Danish Naval Academy. On 1 April 1891 he became manager of the school for deaf people in Nyborg. Herlufsholm School
Herlufsholm School ( da, Herlufsholm Skole og Gods) is a private day and boarding school by the River Suså in Næstved, about south of Copenhagen. Herlufsholm was founded in 1565 as a boarding school for "sons of noble and other honest men" on the site of a former Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. Herlufsholm has been co-educational since the 1960s for day students, as of 1985 for boarding pupils. The student body currently exceeds 600 students, of which approximately 275 students are boarders who lived in the dormitories. The pupils follow a 10-day programme with lessons on Saturdays followed by 3-day weekends. Landsting (Denmark)
Landstinget was the upper house of the Rigsdag (the parliament of Denmark), from 1849 until 1953, when the bicameral system was abolished in favour of unicameralism. Landstinget had powers equal to the Folketing, which made the two houses of parliament hard to distinguish. Originally, membership and the electorate was restricted, and the members were largely conservatives. Membership of the house was then restricted to certain sectors of society: only males with a certain net worth could hold a seat. In 1915, these restrictions were removed, and a few new members were appointed by the existing members. Etymology and earlier use (old Norse: þing) means assembly.
