Johann Baptist Stuntz
Johann Baptist Stuntz (1753, in Arlesheim – 1836, in Munich) was a Swiss-German landscape painter and lithographer. He lived as an artist in Biel, during which time, he painted landscapes in gouache – his paintings of St. Peter's Island in Lake Biel were highly thought of. He later worked as an art dealer in Strasbourg, and from 1808 operated a lithography business in Munich. Arlesheim
Arlesheim is a town and a municipality in the district of Arlesheim in the canton of Basel-Country in Switzerland. Its cathedral chapter seat, bishop's residence and cathedral (1681 / 1761) are listed as a heritage site of national significance. The official language of Arlesheim is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, while the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect. The cathedral has a Baroque organ built by the German builder Johann Andreas Silbermann, based in Alsace, in 1761. The instrument was restored by Metzler in 1959–1962, and is an example of the fusion of French and German organ building styles. Maria Elektrine Von Freyberg
Maria Elektrine Freifrau von Freyberg, born at Strasbourg in 1797, was the daughter and pupil of Johann Baptist Stuntz, a painter of landscapes, under whose tuition she gave proof of great ability. She visited France and Italy, and stayed at Rome some time. Her paintings of historical scenes are distinguished for a tender touch, and she was not less successful in portraiture and landscape painting. One of her best works is a ''Holy Family.'' ''The Birth of St. John,'' and two landscapes, in the album of King Louis of Bavaria, are by this artist; in the Leuchtenberg Gallery ''The Virgin and Child,'' and ''The Three Maries at the Tomb''; and in the Munich Gallery a ''Holy Family'', ''The Naming of St. John the Baptist,'' and ''A Boy playing the flute.'' ''Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie'' (ADB, german: Universal German Biography) is one of the most important and comprehensive biographical reference works in the German language. It was published by the Historical Commission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences between 1875 and 1912 in 56 volumes, printed in Leipzig by Duncker & Humblot. The ADB contains biographies of about 26,500 people who died before 1900 and lived in the German language Sprachraum of their time, including people from the Netherlands before 1648. Its successor, the '' Neue Deutsche Biographie'', was started in 1953 and is planned to be finished in 2023.
