Johann Baptist Emanuel Pohl (23 February 1782, Česká Kamenice (german: Böhmisch Kamnitz) – 22 May 1834, Vienna) was an Austrian botanist, entomologist, geologist, mineralogist, and physician. Biography Johann Emanuel Pohl grew up in ''Politz an der Elbe'' (''Boletice nad Labem''− of northwestern Bohemia, in the present day Děčín District of the northern Czech Republic. He studied in Prague, and graduated as Doctor of Medicine in 1808. While he taught botany at the University he became librarian and curator of the collections of the Princess Kinsky. After a stint teaching at the University he worked in military hospitals in Náchod and Prague. In this period he published the ''Tentamen florae bohemicae'' of which only the first two volumes were published: ''Expositio generalis anatomica organi auditus per classes animalium'' and ''Systematischer Überblick der Reihenfolge der einfachen Fossilien''. The Austrian expedition to Brazil (Österreichische Brasilien-Expedition) was a scientific expedition which explored Brazil. It was organized and financed by the Austrian Empire from 1817 to 1835. History The expedition had as its main supporter the Austrian statesman Prince Klemens Wenzel von Metternich, Prince Metternich and the expedition was associated with the politically significant marriage of Pedro I of Brazil, Dom Pedro of Brazil and Maria Leopoldina of Austria, Archduchess Leopoldine of Austria. Ilha Grande ( "Big Island") is an island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The island, which is part of the municipality of Angra dos Reis, remains largely undeveloped. For almost a century it was closed by the Brazilian government to free movement or settlement because it first housed a leper colony and later a top-security prison (''Colônia Penal de Dois Rios'', later known as ''Instituto Penal Cândido Mendes'').
