Johan Van Hell
Johannes "Johan" Gerardus Diederik van Hell (February 28, 1889 – December 31, 1952) was a Dutch visual artist and musician. His work was included in the 1939 exhibition and sale ''Onze Kunst van Heden'' (Our Art of Today) at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He was a dedicated socialist and a man with a highly developed social conscience. Many of his later works depict the struggles and plight of ‘the man in the street’. In 1925, he decided to produce lithographs to make art available at a reasonable price to the working class. He also gave free private art and music lessons to gifted students who could not afford the tuition. His art ''oeuvre'' is varied, ranging from oil paintings, water colours, wood cuts and lithographs to political posters, ''ex-libris'' and magazine and book covers and illustrations. Art Competitions At The Summer Olympics
Art competitions formed part of the modern Olympic Games during its early years, from 1912 to 1948. The competitions were part of the original intention of the Olympic Movement's founder, Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin. Medals were awarded for works of art inspired by sport, divided into five categories: architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture. The juried art competitions were abandoned in 1954 because artists were considered to be professionals, while Olympic athletes were required to be amateurs. Since 1956, the Olympic cultural programme has taken their place. The Independent Socialist Party ( nl, Onafhankelijke Socialistische Partij; OSP) was a revolutionary socialist political party in the Netherlands. History The party was founded by a group around Jacques de Kadt and Piet J. Schmidt on 28 March 1932. The group had split from the SDAP after a conflict over the internal opposition publication, the ''De Fakkel''. The moderate leadership of the SDAP banned the publication, in reaction to this the leftwing opposition left the party. It entered in the 1933 elections where at won 27,000 votes and nearly one seat. In 1935 the party merged with the Revolutionary Socialist Party, and formed the Revolutionary Socialist Workers Party. Franeker
Franeker (; fry, Frjentsjer) is one of the eleven historical cities of Friesland and capital of the municipality of Waadhoeke. It is located north of the Van Harinxmakanaal and about 20 km west of Leeuwarden. As of 1 January 2014, it had 12,781 inhabitants. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium, established in 1781, is located in the city. History Franeker was founded around 800 as a Carolingian stronghold. Daniel Ruyneman
Daniël Ruyneman (8 August 1886 – 25 July 1963) was a Dutch composer and pianist. Intended for marine service, Ruyneman travelled to India in his early years. He didn't begin studying music until the age of 18, and from 1913-1916 studied composition at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Bernard Zweers. He was initially influenced by Grieg, Debussy and Ravel, followed neoclassical trends (Partita for Strings, 1943, ''Nightingale Quintet'', 1949), produced some large scale romantic works (such as the Violin Concerto), and towards the end of his life experimented with serialism in the four ''Réflexions'' (1959-1961). In 1918 he helped found the Society of Modern Dutch Composers (Nederlansche Vereeniging voor Mod-erne Scheppende Toonkunst), which in 1922 became the Dutch branch of the International Society for Contemporary Music.
