Joe Wilson (footballer, Born 1883)
Joseph Wilson (10 April 1883 – 6 June 1945) was an English professional association football, footballer who played as a centre half in the English Football League, Football League for Blackburn Rovers. He also played for Brighton & Hove Albion and Millwall F.C., Millwall of the Southern Football League, Southern League, and played for Southern Football League XI, that league's representative team. Personal life Wilson was born in 1883 in Westhoughton, near Wigan in Lancashire. Before becoming a professional footballer, he worked as a collier. Wilson married Ann Ellen Settle in 1908. The 1911 Census records the couple living in East Ferry Road, Millwall, with their baby son, also named Joseph. The 1939 Register finds Wilson employed as a railway wagon builder and living in Central Drive, Westhoughton, with his wife and three children of working age. The ''Athletic News and Cyclists' Journal'' was a Manchester-based newspaper founded by Edward Hulton in 1875. It was published weekly, covering weekend sports fixtures other than horse racing, which was already covered by the ''Sporting Chronicle'' founded by Hulton in 1871. The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. Preston North End Football Club, commonly referred to as Preston, North End or PNE, is a professional football club in Preston, Lancashire, England, who currently play in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. The 1903–04 FA Cup was the 33rd season of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup). Manchester City won the competition for the first time, beating Bolton Wanderers 1–0 in the final at Crystal Palace, through a goal scored by Billy Meredith. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. Lancashire League (football)
The Lancashire League has been the name of two separate football competitions for clubs based in northern England. Lancashire League (1889 to 1903) The original Lancashire League was formed in 1889, and was established because of the success of the Football League, which had been established just one year earlier. Prime movers in the formation of the league were the officials of Bury Football Club, who had ambitions to set up a regional competition which would be a stepping stone for them and other clubs to gain a place in the Football League. Although the majority of the clubs were based in the county of Lancashire, the league did eventually accept several clubs from neighbouring Cheshire. Additionally from further afield, Workington, from Cumberland, were members for two seasons, while Doncaster Rovers, from Yorkshire, were also to make an application to join.
