Joe Ryan (Canadian Football)
Joseph Bernard Ryan (11 April 1902 — 2 June 1979) was a Canadian football manager of the Winnipeg Winnipegs and Montreal Alouettes between the 1930s to 1940s. During his manager tenures, Ryan won the Grey Cup with Winnipeg in 1935, 1939 and 1941. He also won the Grey Cup with the Alouettes in 1949. With the Canadian Football League, Ryan worked as the general manager of the Edmonton Eskimos from 1960 to 1965. Ryan was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1968, the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. Early life and education Ryan was born on 11 April 1902 in Starbuck, Manitoba. He attended a law program at the University of Manitoba before dropping out after the first year. Starbuck, Manitoba
Starbuck is a community in Manitoba on the La Salle River, and is located within the Rural Municipality of Macdonald. Starbuck is about a 25-minute drive from Winnipeg along Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 2. Also Provincial Road 332 runs north and south of town. The Canadian Pacific Railway's Souris line still runs through Starbuck providing the primary means of shipping grain out of the terminal. Passenger train service was halted a number of decades ago. Bus service to and from Winnipeg is provided 3 times per week. Starbuck has two churches (Catholic and Lutheran; the local United Church community shares the Lutheran Church after a 2014 fire destroyed the United Church building), a community hall, skating and curling rinks, and an early/middle years school. 1935 Grey Cup
The 23rd Grey Cup was played on December 7, 1935, at Hamilton Amateur Athletic Association Grounds, with 6,405 fans in attendance. It marked the first time that a team from west of Ontario won the Grey Cup. The Winnipeg 'Pegs defeated the Hamilton Tigers 18–12. Game summary Winnipeg scored on the first play from scrimmage in the game. Hamilton kick returner Jack Craig failed to catch the Winnipeg kickoff and Winnipeg recovered. Tim Ryan (born May 16, 1939) is a retired Canadian-born American sportscaster. Ryan was born in Winnipeg and raised in Toronto and attended De La Salle College (Toronto). His father, Joe, was general manager of three Canadian Football League teams in Winnipeg, Montreal and Edmonton and is an honoured member of both the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
