Jock Of The Bushveld (1986 Film)
''Jock of the Bushveld'' is a 1986 South African adventure film directed by Gray Hofmeyr and produced by Duncan MacNeillie for Duncan MacNeillie Production and Toron International. The film stars Jonathan Rands, Jocelyn Broderick and Michael Brunner in lead role along with Gordon Mulholland, Wilson Dunster in supportive roles and the dog Umfubu. The film is based on the 1907 novel by same name written by Irish writer James Percy FitzPatrick who went South Africa in 1800s and experience several incidents in the jungle. Plot In 1886, 20-year-old Percy Fitzpatrick from Cape Town sets out for the Delagoa Bay in Transvaal to dig for gold. On his way there he prevents a weakly puppy, Jock, from being drowned and adopts him. When Percy finally reaches his destination, there is no gold anymore, so he starts out as a foreman. Gray Hofmeyr (born 6 February 1949 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a South African film and television director. In a career that spans almost three decades, Hofmeyr's films have touched many themes and genres. Biography Gray Hofmeyr is considered to be one of the foremost film and television directors and writers in South Africa. He has won more awards than any other in South Africa and over twenty actors and actresses have won best performance awards under his direction. Career Hofmeyr began his career in television in the 1970s in the United Kingdom where he was a floor manager at the BBC. He began directing for television in 1975 and in 1992 began an award-winning scriptwriting career. Maputo Bay ( pt, Baía de Maputo), formerly also known as Delagoa Bay from ''Baía da Lagoa'' in Portuguese, is an inlet of the Indian Ocean on the coast of Mozambique, between 25° 40' and 26° 20' S, with a length from north to south of over 90 km long and 32 km wide. Geography The bay is the northern termination of the series of lagoons which line the coast from Saint Lucia Bay. The opening is toward the northeast. ''Jock of the Bushveld'' is a true story by South African author Sir James Percy FitzPatrick.The Bystander">''The Bystander'', Volume 16 2 October 1907, page 38 The 1907 book tells of FitzPatrick's travels with his dog, Jock, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross, during the 1880s, when he worked as a storeman, prospector's assistant, journalist and ox-wagon transport-rider in the Bushveld region of the Transvaal (then the South African Republic). Early life Jock's mother Jess was the only dog in their camp. FitzPatrick describes her as "an unattractive bull-terrier with a dull brindled coat–black and grey in shadowy stripes. She had small cross-looking eyes and uncertain always-moving ears; she was bad tempered and most unsociable", but everybody respected her. Gordon Mulholland (30 April 1921, Cape Town, South Africa – 30 June 2010, East London, South Africa) was a British actor best known for his performances in the TV soap opera ''The Villagers'' and the movie ''Jock of the Bushveld''. Early life He was born in Cape Town in 1921 to parents Sam Mulholland and Nell. It was not a happy upbringing, he was the only child of five to survive childhood. His mother was the main breadwinner while his father was described as crook and a drunkard. He would eventually be take into care at Nazareth House. He would attend Marist Brothers College but failed to complete matric. Career During World War 2, he joined army's entertainment corp and would entertain troop as a stand-up comedian in North Africa and Italy, performing with Sid James and Laurence Harvey.
