Joanne Currie Nalingu
Joanne Currie Nalingu (born 1964) is an Aboriginal Australian artist based in Caloundra. Her painting ''The River is Calm'' won the 2008 Wynne Prize. Early life Currie is a descendant of the Gunggari people and was born at the Mitchell Yumba's Aboriginal mission. She grew up in Amby and Brisbane. Art Currie is a self-taught artist. She began painting in 1989 and started exhibiting in 1991. By 1994, she had received an Arts Queensland grant. In 2008, her painting ''The River is Calm'' won the Wynne Prize. That painting is in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2009, she was a finalist for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize. Lin Onus was a mentor of hers. Wynne Prize
The Wynne Prize is an Australian landscape painting or figure sculpture art prize. As one of Australia's longest-running art prizes, it was established in 1897 from the bequest of Richard Wynne. Now held concurrently with the Sir John Sulman Prize and the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. It is awarded annually for "the best landscape painting of Australian scenery in oils or watercolours or for the best example of figure sculpture by Australian artists completed during the 12 months preceding the losingdate". Gunggari People
The Gunggari, or Kunggari, are an Aboriginal Australian people of southern Queensland. They are to be distinguished from the Kuungkari. Country The traditional tribal lands of the Gunggari stretched over some , taking in the Upper Nebine and Mungallala creeks from Bonna Vonna and Ballon north to Morven and Mungallala. Language They speak the Gunggari language, a member of the Maric language family. Their language is closely related to, and sometimes considered a dialect of neighbouring Bidjara and Manandanji languages. Lin Onus (4 December 1948 – 23 October 1996), born William McLintock Onus and also known as Lin Burralung McLintock Onus, was an Australian artist of Scottish- Aboriginal origins. He was the son of activist Bill Onus. Early life William McLintock Onus was born at St. George's Hospital, Kew, Melbourne on 4 December 1948 His father William Townsend Onus Jr (Bill), a Yorta Yorta man, became the founder of the Aboriginal Advancement League and was the first Aboriginal JP, dying in 1968, a year after a long campaign bore fruit – the success of the referendum giving the national government responsibility for Aboriginal affairs and including Aboriginal people in the determination of the country's population.
