Joanes Urkixo
Joanes Urkixo Beitia (born 11 June 1955) is a Basque language writer, and film and television writer. Life Urkixo was born in Bilbao. He studied Basque philology at the University of Deusto. He worked as a professor of Basque and Spanish and as a translator and adapter of films and series (in Basque and Spanish). Between 1978 and 1980 he collaborated with the literary group Pott banda, of which were members Bernardo Atxaga, Joxemari Iturralde, and Joseba Sarrionandia Joseba Sarrionandia Uribelarrea (Iurreta, Biscay, April 13, 1958) is a Basque people, Basque writer who has published a large number of books of poetry and short stories, as well as novels. The University of Deusto ( es, Universidad de Deusto; eu, Deustuko Unibertsitatea) is a Spanish private university owned by the Society of Jesus, with campuses in Bilbao and San Sebastián, and the Deusto Business School branch in Madrid. The University of Deusto is the oldest private university in Spain. History Origins The University of Deusto first opened in 1886, having been founded because of the Basque Country's desire to have its own university and the Society of Jesus's wish to move its School of Higher Studies in Laguardia to a more central place. To that effect a huge building was designed by architect Francisco de Cubas, which was the largest building in Bilbao at the time. Now it is the main building of the Bilbao campus, opposite to the Guggenheim Museum, in the district of Deusto, which gives its name to the university. Bernardo Atxaga (born 27 July 1951), pseudonym of Joseba Irazu Garmendia, is a Spanish Basque writer and self-translator. Biography Atxaga was born in Asteasu, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain in 1951. Joseba Sarrionandia
Joseba Sarrionandia Uribelarrea (Iurreta, Biscay, April 13, 1958) is a Basque writer who has published a large number of books of poetry and short stories, as well as novels. He has been awarded on numerous occasions for his work, and is nowadays a respected literary personality in the Basque Country. In the early 80s, he was member of the Basque separatist group ETA. In 1985 he escaped from prison and since then he lived underground for decades while continuing to create and publish. In November 2016, it was revealed that he lives in Cuba, where he holds a position as lecturer at the University of Havana. Biography He earned a Basque Philology PhD from the University of Deusto, Bilbao and started working as a Basque language teacher. Laura Mintegi
Laura Mintegi Lakarra (born October 26, 1955) is a Basque author, politician and a professor at the University of the Basque Country. Although she was born in Navarre, she moved to Biscay at an early age and has lived there ever since; first in Bilbao and later in Algorta. She has a degree in History and a PhD in Psychology. She has been a professor at the University of the Basque Country since 1981, where she teaches in the Department of Didactics for Language and Literature. She was the director of this Department from 1999 to 2006, and retook the job again in 2010. Besides that, she has been the president of the Basque PEN Club since 2004. Euskaltzaindia (the official academy of Basque language) named her correspondent in 2006.
