The Czechs ( cs, Češi, ; singular Czech, masculine: ''Čech'' , singular feminine: ''Češka'' ), or the Czech people (), are a West Slavic ethnic group and a nation native to the Czech Republic in Central Europe, who share a common ancestry, culture, history, and the Czech language. Ethnic Czechs were called Bohemians in English until the early 20th century, referring to the former name of their country, Bohemia, which in turn was adapted from the late Iron Age tribe of Celtic Boii. During the Migration Period, West Slavic tribes settled in the area, "assimilated the remaining Celtic and Germanic populations", and formed a principality in the 9th century, which was initially part of Great Moravia, in form of Duchy of Bohemia and later Kingdom of Bohemia, the predecessors of the modern republic. Jiřina Steimarová
Jiřina Steimarová (24 January 1916, Prague, Austria-Hungary – 7 October 2007, Prague, Czech Republic) was a Czech film and television actress. Steimarová made her screen debut in the controversial 1933 Hedy Lamarr film '' Ecstasy''. She appeared in nearly 40 films and TV shows during her career. Family Her parents were both actors. She was also the mother of actress Evelýna Steimarová and actor Jiří Kodet. Jiří Kodet, an award winning actor, predeceased his mother, dying from cancer in 2005. Death Jiřina Steimarová died on 7 October 2007, aged 91. Jiřina Třebická (1 November 1930 – 23 January 2005) was a Czech dancer and theatre and film actress. Career Her artistic career began first as a dancer in regional theaters. Since 1947, she worked in urban theatres in Most and České Budějovice and then moved to Ostrava where she worked since 1953 in a Dramatical ensemble of Petr Bezruč. Remained there until 1965 when, together with actor and director Jan Kačer and other colleagues stood before the founding of The Drama Club The Drama Club (Czech: ''Činoherní klub'') is a theatre located in Prague. The Drama Club was founded by Ladislav Smoček and Jaroslav Vostrý. The opening performance of ''Piknik'' took place on 3 March 1965. Jiřina Švorcová
Jiřina Švorcová (May 25, 1928 – August 8, 2011) was a Czech actress and pro-Communist activist. Her acting career lasted more than forty years, but she largely retired after the 1989 Velvet Revolution and devoted herself to advocacy of the Communist Party. Švorcová worked in television, theater and film during the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. She spent more than forty years at the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague. Her best known work came during the 1970s in the Czechoslovak television series, ''Žena za pultem'' or ''A Woman Behind the Counter''. Švorcová was a devote supporter of Communism and a supporter of the former Communist government of Czechoslovakia. In 1976, Švorcová was appointed to the leadership of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Jiřina Štěpničková (3 April 1912 – 5 September 1985) was a Czech actress. She spent 10 years in prison for an attempt to illegally cross a border. Life Jiřina Julie Štěpničková was born on 3 April 1912 in Prague. She started acting at age 16 when her high school professor Jindřich Honzl brought her to Liberated Theatre. In 1930 she was already acting in the National Theatre. From 1936 to 1951 she was acting in the Vinohrady Theatre. In the 1930s and 1940s she was a lead actress in many Czechoslovak movies. In 1951, she decided to emigrate after receiving a letter allegedly from František Čáp inviting her to West Germany. However the letter was planted by secret service. She was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Her son was sent to a children's home. Jiřina Šejbalová (17 September 1905–23 August 1981) was a Czech actress of the stage, television, and film. For many years she taught theatre classes at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Born in Prague, Šejbalová came from a family of clerks. After studying at the Prague Conservatory, she began her career as an opera singer at the National Theatre in Brno in the mid-1920s. During the 1927-1928 season she abandoned her opera career and began working as a dramatic actress at that house in avant-garde plays directed by Jiří Frejka. She became a member of the National Theatre in Prague in 1928. She performed as a stage actress at that theatre up until her retirement in 1971. She was accepted to The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) at her third attempt. Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
