James Robertson Military Medal, MM (15 March 1885 – 26 April 1968) was a Scottish professional association football, footballer who played as a forward (association football), forward in the English Football League, Football League for Blackburn Rovers, in the Scottish Football League, Scottish League for Vale of Leven F.C., Vale of Leven, Falkirk F.C., Falkirk and Dumbarton F.C., Dumbarton, and in the English Southern Football League, Southern League for Brighton & Hove Albion. Life and career Robertson was born in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, in 1885. He played juvenile football for the Bonhill Union club before signing for Vale of Leven F.C., Vale of Leven in 1903. In the 1904–05 season, he scored in all but three of Vale's matches, and his goalscoring attracted attention from major clubs on both sides of the border, including Aston Villa and Rangers F.C., Rangers. The Military Medal (MM) was a military decoration awarded to personnel of the British Army and other arms of the armed forces, and to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land. The award was established in 1916, with retrospective application to 1914, and was awarded to other ranks for "acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire".
