Jimmy Robertson (footballer, Born 1885)
James Robertson MM (15 March 1885 – 26 April 1968) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Blackburn Rovers, in the Scottish League for Vale of Leven, Falkirk and Dumbarton, and in the English Southern League for Brighton & Hove Albion. Life and career Robertson was born in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire, in 1885. He played juvenile football for the Bonhill Union club before signing for Vale of Leven in 1903. In the 1904–05 season, he scored in all but three of Vale's matches, and his goalscoring attracted attention from major clubs on both sides of the border, including Aston Villa and Rangers. In May 1905, he went to England to join Blackburn Rovers. The additional £50 payable should Robertson play for Rovers' first team was soon forthcoming, as he went on to score 22 goals from 78 Football League First Division matches over three seasons, before moving on to the English Southern League with Brighton & Hove Albion. ... Military Medal
The Military Medal (MM) was a military decoration awarded to personnel of the British Army and other arms of the armed forces, and to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land. The award was established in 1916, with retrospective application to 1914, and was awarded to other ranks for "acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire". The award was discontinued in 1993, when it was replaced by the Military Cross, which was extended to all ranks, while other Commonwealth nations instituted their own award systems in the post war period. The Scottish Football League (SFL) was a league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. From its foundation in 1890 until the breakaway Scottish Premier League (SPL) was formed in 1998, the SFL was the top level of football in Scotland. After 1998, the SFL represented levels 2 to 4 of the Scottish football league system. In June 2013, the SFL merged with the SPL to form the Scottish Professional Football League. ''The Courier'' (known as ''The Courier & Advertiser'' between 1926 and 2012) is a newspaper published by DC Thomson in Dundee, Scotland. As of 2013, it is printed in six regional editions: Dundee, Angus & The Mearns, Fife, West Fife, Perthshire, and Stirlingshire. However, by 2020 this had been reduced to three regional editions for Perth and Perthshire; Angus and Dundee and Fife. Celtic Park is the home stadium of Celtic Football Club, in the Parkhead area of Glasgow, Scotland. With a capacity of 60,832, it is the largest football stadium in Scotland, and the eighth-largest stadium in the United Kingdom. It is also known as Parkhead or Paradise. Raith Rovers Football Club is a Scottish professional football club based in the town of Kirkcaldy, Fife. The club was founded in 1883 and currently competes in the Scottish Championship as a member of the Scottish Professional Football League. Home Scots v Anglo-Scots was an annual association football trial match organised by the Scottish Football Association between the 1890s and 1920s to examine the abilities of possible players for upcoming full British Home Championship internationals, primarily the 'Auld Enemy' England v Scotland fixture. Selection trials were commonplace among football federations, but this match was unusual in that its regular format consisted of players based in one country (the 'homes') facing a selection of those who had moved to another country (the 'Anglos'), in order to form a combined team to oppose that other country's natives in international play. Jock Simpson
John Robert Simpson (25 December 1886 – 4 January 1959) was a footballer who played as an outside right in the 1900s and 1910s. Career Club Simpson's footballing career began with Laurieston Villa, and after a trial with Rangers, he signed for Falkirk in 1905. The club finished runners-up in the Scottish Football League twice during his six-year spell ( 1907–08 and 1909–10), and he scored over 100 league goals, sometimes playing at centre forward, including 32 from 33 appearances in 1907–08, the highest total in the country. In January 1911, Simpson moved to Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £1800, a record fee received by a Scottish club. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981.
