Jimmy Carmichael (rugby Union )
Jimmy Carmichael (22 March 1900 – 4 January 1990) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career He played rugby union for Watsonians. Provincial career He played for Edinburgh District in the 1920 inter-city match. International career He received 3 caps for Scotland in 1921. Family He was born to Duncan Smith Carmichael (1870-1933) and Jane Ann Jackson Howden (1873-1947). He married Vera Margaret Wood Hawks (1900-1990) in 1926. His son Dennis also played for Watsonians. He is a noted administrator for the club, a former president, and Team Secretary and Honorary President. He won a Lifetime Achievement Award by the SRU. Wing (rugby Union)
In the game of rugby union, there are 15 players on each team, comprising eight forwards (wearing jerseys numbered 1–8) and seven backs (numbered 9–15). In addition, there may be up to eight replacement players "on the bench", numbered 16–23. Players are not restricted to a single position, although they generally specialise in just one or two that suit their skills and body types. Players that play multiple positions are called "utility players". Forwards compete for the ball in scrums and Line-out (rugby union), line-outs and are generally bigger and stronger than the backs. Watsonian FC
Watsonian Football Club is a rugby union club based in Edinburgh and part of the Scottish Rugby Union. The club is connected with George Watson's College as a club for former pupils, and changed its policy in the 1980s to be a fully open club, welcoming players of all abilities regardless of whether they attended the school or not. It is one of a small number of rugby union clubs entitled to call itself a 'football club', rather than a 'rugby football club'. Edinburgh District (rugby Union)
Edinburgh District was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Edinburgh area, as well as others from the rest of east central Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Lothian regional council area. Historically the Edinburgh District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. The Edinburgh District rugby union team was founded in 1872. The team played the world's first inter-district match that year against Glasgow District rugby union team. The amateur Edinburgh District side evolved into the professional Edinburgh Rugby side in 1996; one year after rugby union allowed professionalism in 1995. The Scotland national rugby union team represents Scotland in men's international rugby union and is administered by the Scottish Rugby Union. The team takes part in the annual Six Nations Championship and participates in the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years.
