''Jim McLeod's Jazz Tracks'' is a compilation album of jazz music recorded for Jim McLeod's long running ABC-FM radio show Jazztrack. The lead track "Windows of Arquez" by Bryce Rohde And Bruce Cale was at the time the shows theme song. Reception The album was nominated as the Best Jazz Album at the 1990 ARIA Awards but lost out to Browne, Costello & Grabowsky with their album ''Six By Three''. Adrian Jackson, writing in BRW, praised the album and signed off "hoping it turns out to be the first of a series." ABC Classic FM
ABC Classic, formerly ABC-FM (also ABC Fine Music), and then ABC Classic FM, is an Australian classical music radio station available in Australia and internationally. Its website features classical music news, features and listening guides. It is operated by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). History ABC Classic was established in 1976 as "ABC-FM", and later for a short time was known as "ABC Fine Music" (a play on the letters FM). It became known as ABC Classic FM in 1994, before adopting its current name in January 2019. It was the ABC's first experiment in FM broadcasting – which had become a necessity in Australia as broadcasters ran out of AM frequencies on which to transmit. Allan Browne
Allan Vincent Browne (28 July 1944 – 13 June 2015) was an Australian jazz drummer and composer first known for his work in The Red Onion Jazz Band in the 1960s. Browne won the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in ARIA Music Awards of 1990 and ARIA Music Awards of 1996 with Paul Grabowsky Trio. Browne was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2013 for service to music as a jazz musician, and to the community. Gary Costello (musician)
Gary John Costello (1952–2006) was an Australian jazz double bass player. He was a member of Paul Grabowsky Trio, which won the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in 1990 and 1996. Paul Grabowsky
Paul Atherstone Grabowsky (born 27 September 1958) is an Australian pianist and composer. Biography Born in Lae, Papua New Guinea, Grabowsky is a pianist and composer of music for film, theatre and opera. His father Alistair had lived in Papua New Guinea with his wife Charlotte since the 1930s working on oil rigs, building roads, flying planes. Grabowsky described his ancestry as "failed Polish aristocracy". His grandfather was a legitimate Polish Count of the Grabowksi noble family, a descendant of Jan Jerzy Grabowski from where he gets his title; his grandfather was exiled from Poland and lived in Scotland. His older brother Michael took great interest in the young composer and later worked with Paul co-ordinating and producing many of his television and film scores in the 1990s. Bryce Rohde
Bryce Benno Rohde (12 September 192326 January 2016) was an Australian jazz pianist and composer. He was strongly influenced by George Russell's musical conceptions. Early life Rohde was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He played jazz in Adelaide early in his career, then moved to Canada in 1953. Career In 1954 he and two other expatriates plus an American formed the Australian Jazz Quartet/Quintet. The group recorded several albums and toured widely in the United States, then broke up in 1958 following a tour of Australia itself. Rohde led his own quartets in Australia until 1964, and moved to California in 1965. After then he based himself out of San Francisco, leading his own ensembles at times. Robert Graeme Barnard (24 November 19337 May 2022) was an Australian trumpet and cornet player. He was nominated at the ARIA Music Awards of 1996 for ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album, Best Jazz Album for ''Live at the Sydney Opera House'', which was recorded with the Australian Jazz Allstars. In the 1990 Australia Day Honours Barnard was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for "service to music, particularly jazz." Barnard's parents had formed a dance band in the 1920s, his mother Kath (died April 1981) was the bandleader and pianist, his father Jim Barnard (died November 1983) was on saxophone, drums and banjo. Dale Barlow
Dale Barlow (born Sydney, Australia, 25 December 1959) is a jazz saxophonist, flute player and composer. He has a Masters of Music degree begun at City College New York under Ron Carter and completed at ANU Canberra. He has received ARIA Awards, Album of the Year/ Jazz performer of the year/ International Artist of the Year/ Bicentennial Artist of the Year, four Mo Awards and grants. Career Barlow briefly studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the late 1970s. In the early 1980s Barlow moved to New York, where he was a member of two groups, the Cedar Walton Quartet and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He studied saxophone with George Coleman and Dave Liebman, piano with Barry Harris, and Hal Galper, and won a BMI scholarship to study at the "Jazz composers workshop" with Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Album.
