Gary Costello (musician)
Gary John Costello (1952–2006) was an Australian jazz double bass player. He was a member of Paul Grabowsky Trio, which won the ARIA Award for Best Jazz Album in 1990 and 1996. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. Paul Grabowsky Trio
Paul Grabowsky Trio were an Australian jazz ensemble founded in 1983 by Paul Grabowsky on piano. By 1989 he was joined by Allan Browne on drums and Gary Costello on double bass. They won Best Jazz Album for ''Six by Three'' (1989) at the ARIA Music Awards of 1990 and for ''When Words Fail'' (1995) in 1996. The trio disbanded in 2001. Gary Costello died in December 2006, aged 54; Browne died in June 2015, aged 70. History Paul Grabowsky on piano formed his eponymous trio in 1983 in Melbourne. By 1986 Grabowsky was in Germany and was joined by Joachim "Rocky" Knauer on double bass and Sunk Pöschl on drums. They released their debut album, ''Contact Sport Midnight Waltz'', in that year. It was co-produced by Grabowsky and Pöschl. In 1989 a new trio with Allan Browne on drums (ex- the Red Onion Jazz Band) and Gary Costello on double bass, issued the second album, ''Six by Three''. The Fourth Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards or simply The ARIAS) was held on 26 March 1990 at the Darling Harbour Convention Centre in Sydney. Australian host Glenn Shorrock of Little River Band was assisted by Quincy Jones, and other presenters, to distribute 24 awards. For the first time there were live performances but the awards were not televised. The ARIA Hall of Fame inducted two artists: Percy Grainger and Sherbet. The 10th Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards or simply The ARIAS) was held on 30 September 1996 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. Presenters distributed 28 awards with the big winner for the year was You Am I gaining six awards. In addition to previous categories an Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Silverchair, which acknowledged " heirconquering world charts with the single 'Tomorrow' and the debut album album ''frogstomp''." A Special Achievement Award was presented to Slim Dusty. The ARIA Hall of Fame inducted: Australian Crawl and Horrie Dargie. Australian Crawl's founding guitarist Brad Robinson, was unable to attend; he was hospitalised with lymphoma (diagnosed three years earlier) and died two weeks after the ceremony. Ryerson Index
The Ryerson Index is an online index of death notices from Australian newspapers, past and present, compiled by the Sydney-based non-profit organisation Ryerson Index Incorporated. The index database has in excess of 5 million records compiled from more than 280 newspapers across Australia. Obituaries, funeral notices and probate notices are also included. Indexing uses the crowdsourcing model, and is continuously updated by volunteers over the internet. The idea of an index was first suggested by John Graham of the Sydney Dead Persons Society in 1998. The concept gained momentum the following year when another member of the society, Joyce Ryerson, revealed that she had a 14-year collection of death notices from ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' kept in her laundry. A team of volunteers worked three years to compile the index from this initial material. Male ( symbol: ♂) is the sex of an organism that produces the gamete (sex cell) known as sperm, which fuses with the larger female gamete, or ovum, in the process of fertilization.
