Jiehkkevárri
Jiehkkevárri (alternative spellings: ''Jiekkevarri'', ''Jiekkevarre'', or ''Jæggevarre'') is a mountain on the border of the municipalities of Lyngen and Tromsø in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is the highest mountain in Troms og Finnmark and has the second highest prominence ( primary factor) among Norwegian mountains. The tall mountain sits about northeast of the village of Lakselvbukt and about southwest of the village of Lyngseidet. The first people known to have climbed it were Geoffrey Hastings (British) and Elias Hogrenning (Norwegian) in 1899. Its summit is ice-capped and any ascent involves a crossing of crevassed glaciers. Therefore, climbing it needs guiding by experienced mountaineers. In winter, an experienced ski-mountaineer can traverse Jiehkkevárri in one long day, descending almost from the top via the steep, northeast facing couloir, described by the late Andreas Fransson as "a future classic for the new generation of mountain skiers". Lyngen Alps
The Lyngen Alps ( no, Lyngsalpene) are a mountain range in northeastern Troms og Finnmark county in Norway, east of the Tromsø (city), city of Tromsø. The mountain range runs through the municipalities of Lyngen, Balsfjord, and Storfjord. The mountains follow the western shore of the Lyngen (fjord), Lyngen fjord in a north-south direction. The length of the range is at least (depending on definition—there are mountains all the way south to the border with Sweden) and the width is . The mountains dominate the Lyngen Peninsula, which is bordered by the Lyngen (fjord), Lyngen fjord to the east, and the Ullsfjorden to the west. Crevasse
A crevasse is a deep crack, that forms in a glacier or ice sheet that can be a few inches across to over 40 feet. Crevasses form as a result of the movement and resulting stress associated with the shear stress generated when two semi-rigid pieces above a plastic substrate have different rates of movement. The resulting intensity of the shear stress causes a breakage along the faces. Description Crevasses often have vertical or near-vertical walls, which can then melt and create seracs, arches, and other ice formations. These walls sometimes expose layers that represent the glacier's stratigraphy. Crevasse size often depends upon the amount of liquid water present in the glacier. Serac
A serac (from Swiss French ''sérac'') is a block or column of glacial ice, often formed by intersecting crevasses on a glacier. Commonly house-sized or larger, they are dangerous to mountaineers, since they may topple with little warning. Even when stabilized by persistent cold weather, they can be an impediment to glacier travel. Seracs are found within an icefall, often in large numbers, or on ice faces on the lower edge of a hanging glacier. Notable examples of the overhanging glacier edge type are well-known obstacles on some of the world's highest mountains, including K2 at "The Bottleneck" and Kanchenjunga on the border of India and Nepal. Andreas Fransson (15 April 1983 – 29 September 2014) was a Swedish extreme skier perhaps best known for his having made descents of the hitherto un-skied specific faces of mountains.
