Jhenaidah District
Jhenaidah District ( bn, ঝিনাইদহ) is a district in southwestern Bangladesh. It is a part of the Khulna Division. It has an area of . It is bordered by Kushtia District to the north, Jessore District and West Bengal, India to the south, Rajbari District and Magura District to the east, and Chuadanga District and West Bengal, India to the west. The largest city and headquarter of this district is Jhenaidah. At the beginning of the British rule Jhenaidah was a police outpost and was turned into a thana in 1793. The Jhenaidah Sub division was established in 1862 and was turned into a district in 1984. Thana or Thânâ ( bn, থানা literally "police station") mean the district controlled by a police station. History Thana was a subdistrict in the administrative geography of Bangladesh. The Local Government Ordinance of 1982 was amended a year later, redesignating and upgrading the existing ''thanas'' as ''upazilas''. Later in 1999 geographic regions under administrations of thanas were converted into upazilas. All administrative terms in this level were renamed from ''thana'' to ''upazila''. The word thana is now used to solely refer to police stations. Generally, there is one police station for each upazila. Jhenidah Sadar ( bn, ঝিনাইদহ সদর) is an upazila of Jhenaidah District in the Division of Khulna, Bangladesh. Geography Jhenidah Sadar is located at . It has a total area 467.75 km2. Demographics According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila had 108,924 households and a population of 455,932, 23.8% of whom lived in urban areas. 8.8% of the population was under the age of 5. The literacy rate (age 7 and over) was 51.8%, compared to the national average of 51.8%. An ''upazila'' ( bn, উপজেলা, upôzela, lit=sub-district pronounced: ), formerly called ''thana'', is an administrative region in Bangladesh, functioning as a sub-unit of a district. The Ad-Dharmi is a Dalit religion in the state of Punjab in India Ad-Dharmis are 11.48% of the total of lower status communities in Punjab.
