Jew Bill (Maryland)
The Jew Bill (more formally, "An Act to extend to the sect of people professing the Jewish religion, the same rights and privileges enjoyed by Christians") was passed in 1826 by the Maryland General Assembly to allow Jews to hold public office in the state. The bill was passed on January 5, 1826, "after a long and arduous struggle." It altered the state's Test Act to allow Jews to hold public office upon swearing to a belief in "a future state of rewards and punishments;" previously, the state's constitution required public officeholders to make "a declaration of a belief in the Christian religion." The fight to pass it was led in the early 1820s by Jacob I. Cohen Jr. (1789–1869) and Solomon Etting (1764–1847), who subsequently ran successfully for Baltimore City Council and became the first Jews to hold elected office in Maryland. Maryland General Assembly
The Maryland General Assembly is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland that convenes within the State House in Annapolis. It is a bicameral body: the upper chamber, the Maryland Senate, has 47 representatives and the lower chamber, the Maryland House of Delegates, has 141 representatives. Thomas Kennedy (1776–1832)
Thomas Kennedy (1776–1832) was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and Maryland Senate. He was the leading force behind the passage of the so-called "Jew Bill," which allowed Jews to hold public office in Maryland. Maryland's constitution had been adopted in 1776, and it required all public officeholders to make "a declaration of a belief in the Christian religion." Kennedy led the fight to remove this discriminatory requirement. His measure was voted down several times between 1818 and 1826, by which time he himself had been elected to the Maryland legislature. Arguing on behalf of the change, Kennedy said, "There are few Jews in the United States. In Maryland there are very few. But if there was only one — to that one, we ought to do justice." Jacob I
Catholicos Jacob I the Learned was the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church between 1268 and 1286. The pontifical throne was vacant for a few months after the death of Constantine I until it was filled by Jacob I from the region of Tarsus or Sis. He took up residence at the Catholicos's palace of Hromkla. He had been the author of many works and of hymns as well. Solomon Etting
Solomon Etting (28 July 1764 – 6 August 1847) was a Jewish merchant and politician in Baltimore, Maryland. Before moving to Baltimore in 1791, Etting lived in York and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Maryland banned non-Christians from holding office or practicing law. In 1797, Etting and his father-in-law Bernard Gratz petitioned to “be placed upon the same footing with other good citizens" but were unsuccessful then, as well as in 1802 and 1824. The Baltimore City Council is the legislative branch that governs the City of Baltimore and its more than 600,000 citizens. It has 14 members elected by district and a president elected at-large; all serve four-year terms.
