Jersey Coastguard
Jersey Coastguard is responsible for the safety of life at sea along with the security and protection of the maritime environment for Jersey’s territorial waters. The service is provided by the Ports of Jersey from the Maritime Operations Centre in Maritime House in the port of St Helier, Jersey. Search and Rescue (SAR) Jersey Coastguard is a tier-one emergency service on the island of Jersey. If you dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard or call up on VHF marine radio channel 16 you will speak directly with the team 24/7 to coordinate the rescue. They work closely with adjacent services, including Guernsey Coastguard, Cross Jobourg, Cross Corsen, and HM Coastguard in the UK. If there is an incident at sea, there are several assets available in the island. Two lifeboat charities operate in Jersey. Maritime Mobile Service Identity
A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is effectively a maritime object's international ''maritime telephone number'', a temporarily assigned UID, issued by that object's current flag state, (unlike an IMO, which is a global forever UID). An MMSI comprises a series of nine digits, consisting Maritime Identification Digits(country-codes), concatenated with a specific identifier. Whenever an object is re-flagged, a new MMSI must be assigned. A 'maritime object' could be anything which requests an MMSI identifier. e.g. a vessel, fixed offshore installation, mobile unit, maritime aircraft, coast station, etc. Communications may be routed to 'individual objects', or to 'groups of objects'. Channel 16 VHF (156.8 MHz) is a marine VHF radio frequency designated as an international distress frequency. Marine VHF radio is a worldwide system of two way radio transceivers on ships and watercraft used for bidirectional voice communication from ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore (for example with harbormasters), and in certain circumstances ship-to-aircraft. An electronic navigational chart or ENC is an official database created by a national hydrographic office for use with an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). An electronic chart must conform to standards stated in the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Publication S-57 before it can be certified as an ENC. Radar is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the distance (''ranging''), angle, and radial velocity of objects relative to the site. Direction finding (DF), or radio direction finding (RDF), isin accordance with International Telecommunication Union (ITU)defined as radio location that uses the reception of radio waves to determine the direction in which a radio station or an object is located. This can refer to radio or other forms of wireless communication, including radar signals detection and monitoring (ELINT/ESM). By combining the direction information from two or more suitably spaced receivers (or a single mobile receiver), the source of a transmission may be located via triangulation. La Corbière
La Corbière (Jèrriais: ''La Corbiéthe'') is the extreme south-western point of Jersey in St. Brélade. The name means "a place where crows gather", deriving from the word ''corbîn'' meaning ''crow''. However, seagulls have long since displaced the crows from their coastal nesting sites. The rocks and extreme tidal variation around this stretch of Jersey's coast have been treacherous for navigation and La Corbière has been the scene of many shipwrecks, including that of the mail packet "Express" on 20 September 1859. Monument Sited on the headland overlooking the lighthouse is a monument sculpted by Derek Tristram and erected in April 1997, to commemorate a rescue that took place.
