Jerry Slijngard
Jerry Slijngard is a Surinamese Army colonel and public official. In 2003, he was appointed to head the National Coordination Centre for Emergency Management (NCCR). In 2013, he was appointed to head the newly created Coast Guard. COVID-19 pandemic At the announcement of the first COVID-19 infection in Suriname, Slijngard was appointed as a member of the National COVID-19 Crisis Management Team, tasked with coordinating the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname. After Antoine Joly, the French ambassador to Suriname, tested positive on 24 April 2020, Danielle Veira, the Director of the COVID-19 Crisis Management Team, went into quarantine. The COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname was caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (). The virus was confirmed to have reached Suriname on 13 March 2020. The case was a person who travelled from the Netherlands the previous week. On 3 April 2020, one person died. On 3 May 2020, all nine cases had recovered. Antoine Joly
Antoine Joly (16 July 1955) is a French politician who served as ambassador to Suriname, CARICOM and Guyana from 2017 until 2021. Biography Joly was born in Le Mans, and graduated from Sciences Po. He started his career for the City of Paris and in 1981 became the head of the Tax and Economic Office. From 28 March 1993 until 21 April 1997, Joly was the deputy for Sarthe's 3rd constituency in the National Assembly. His party affiliation is RPR. From 15 July 2011 until August 2015 he served as French ambassador to Nicaragua. On 17 January 2017 Joly was appointed as the French ambassador to Suriname as well the ambassador for French Guiana to the CARICOM, and non-resident ambassador to Guyana. On 24 March 2020, Joly became the eight case of COVID-19 in Suriname. Danielle Veira (born 11 November 1970 in Paramaribo) is a Surinamese Army colonel and public official. Veria graduated from the Anton de Kom University of Suriname in 2001 with an LL.M. In 2006, she earned an M.A. in international development policy from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, United States. She also earned an M.A. in international strategic security studies in 2016 from the National Defense University in Washington DC. Between 2010 and 2016, Veira was Deputy Director of the Surinamese Ministry of Defence. As of 2016, Veira is a part-time professor at the Anton de Kom University. 2020 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. Electoral system The 51 seats in the National Assembly are elected using party-list proportional representation under the D'Hondt method in ten multi-member constituencies containing between two and seventeen seats. The ten electoral constituencies are coterminous with the ten administrative districts of Suriname.
