Jenny Ondioline
''Jenny Ondioline'' is a 1993 EP by the Anglo-French band Stereolab, which served as the lead single from the album '' Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements''. It was released on CD and 10" vinyl. Its tracks were later re-released on the ''Oscillons from the Anti-Sun'' compilation. In the UK, some copies were stickered with the message "Includes ''French Disco''", due to that track receiving an unexpected amount of airplay on British radio. "French Disco" was also given co-billing with "Jenny Ondioline" on the UK Singles chart, on which it was Stereolab's first entry, peaking at number 75. The EP was the first Stereolab release on Elektra Records in the USA. At the group's request, and in keeping with their "retro" aesthetic, the artwork for this and most subsequent Stereolab releases used the 1970s Elektra logo (a slightly revised version of which was subsequently reintroduced and remains in use today) instead of the then-current logo. Stereolab
Stereolab are an Anglo- French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. Led by the songwriting team of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the group's music combines influences from krautrock, lounge and 1960s pop music, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French. Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the Surrealist and Situationist movements. On stage, they play in a more feedback-driven and guitar-oriented style. The band also draw from funk, jazz and Brazilian music, and were one of the first artists to be dubbed "post-rock". They are regarded among the most innovative and influential groups of the 1990s. John Peel
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), known professionally as John Peel, was an English disc jockey (DJ) and radio presenter. He was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. He is widely acknowledged for promoting artists of multiple genres, including pop, dub reggae, punk rock and post-punk, electronic music and dance music, indie rock, extreme metal and British hip hop. Georges Marcel Charles Jenny (29 April 1913 – 23 September 1975) was a French musician, poet, and electronic instrument builder. His best-known invention was an electronic keyboard instrument called the Ondioline (sometimes referred to as the Jenny Ondioline). It is considered a forerunner of the Synthesizer. The Ondioline is monophonic, yet it is capable of generating an array of sounds, and features a keyboard that produces a natural-sounding vibrato via side-to-side finger movements when keys are depressed. Development of the instrument Jenny conceived the instrument as a low-cost alternative to the then-well known but expensive Ondes Martenot. The Martenot was used in serious music, but Jenny planned the Ondioline for a broader consumer market, including pop music. Ondioline
The Ondioline is an electronic keyboard musical instrument, developed and built by Frenchman Georges Jenny. Sometimes referred to as the "Jenny Ondioline," the instrument is considered a forerunner of the synthesizer. First conceived by Jenny in 1939, he continued refining and reconfiguring the device, producing dozens of variant models up until his death in 1975. Though monophonic, the Ondioline is capable of creating a wide variety of sounds. Its keyboard spans three octaves, but by adjusting a register knob a player can render up to eight octaves. The instrument's keyboard is suspended on custom-designed springs, which enables a natural vibrato if the player manipulates a key laterally (from side to side) as that key is depressed. Cineplexx is an electronic musician from Argentina. He has released eight albums. Biography Sebastian Litmanovich was born March 13, 1973, in Buenos Aires. He is a graphic artist and musician who currently lives in London. His influences run from The Velvet Underground to ABBA. In 1998, after playing in a few bands, Litmanovich founded Cineplexx. His first release, ''Posología,'' appeared through Caipirinha; an experimental electronic label based in NY. It was followed by the self released album ''Electrocardiograma'' in 2003, which was re-released by Cherry Red in 2010. The Festive Fifty was originally an annual list of the year's 50 (though the exact figure varied above and below this number) best songs compiled at the end of the year and voted for by listeners to John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show. It was usually dominated by indie and rock songs which did not fully represent the diversity of music played by Peel but rather the majority opinion among his listeners. After Peel's death the tradition of the Festive Fifty was continued, first by other Radio 1 DJs and then (when Radio 1 decided to discontinue it) by the Internet radio station Dandelion Radio. History The first Festive Fifty was broadcast in 1976 and differed in format to later charts in that it was not restricted to songs from that year.
