Jennifer Schultens
Jennifer Carol Schultens (born 1965) is an American mathematician specializing in low-dimensional topology and knot theory. She is a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Davis. Education Schultens earned her Ph.D. in 1993 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her dissertation, ''Classification of Heegaard Splittings for Some Seifert Manifolds'', was supervised by Martin Scharlemann. Research Schultens is the author of the book '' Introduction to 3-Manifolds'' (Graduate Studies in Mathematics, 2014). With Martin Scharlemann and Toshio Saito, she is a co-author of ''Lecture Notes On Generalized Heegaard Splittings'' (World Scientific, 2016). Her dissertation research involved the classification of Heegaard splittings of three-dimensional manifolds into handlebodies, which she also published in the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Low-dimensional Topology
In mathematics, low-dimensional topology is the branch of topology that studies manifolds, or more generally topological spaces, of four or fewer dimensions. Representative topics are the structure theory of 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds, knot theory, and braid groups. This can be regarded as a part of geometric topology. It may also be used to refer to the study of topological spaces of dimension 1, though this is more typically considered part of continuum theory. History A number of advances starting in the 1960s had the effect of emphasising low dimensions in topology. The solution by Stephen Smale, in 1961, of the Poincaré conjecture in five or more dimensions made dimensions three and four seem the hardest; and indeed they required new methods, while the freedom of higher dimensions meant that questions could be reduced to computational methods available in surgery theory. Michael Kapovich
Michael Kapovich (also ''Misha Kapovich'', Михаил Эрикович Капович, transcription Mikhail Erikovich Kapovich, born 1963) is a Russian-American mathematician. Kapovich was awarded a doctorate in 1988 at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics in Novosibirsk with thesis advisor Samuel Leibovich Krushkal and thesis "Плоские конформные структуры на 3-многообразиях" (Flat conformal structures on 3-manifolds, Russian lang. thesis). In mathematics, specifically in topology, the operation of connected sum is a geometric modification on manifolds. Its effect is to join two given manifolds together near a chosen point on each. This construction plays a key role in the classification of closed surfaces. More generally, one can also join manifolds together along identical submanifolds; this generalization is often called the fiber sum. There is also a closely related notion of a connected sum on knots, called the knot sum or composition of knots.
