Jef Van Den Eynde
Jozef Maria August Antoon (Jef) Van den Eynde (21 December 1879 – 12 April 1929) was a prominent figure from Leuven's student life, an activist and member of the Council of Flanders during the First World War. After the war, he fled to the Netherlands, having received a 20-year sentence in absentia for collaboration. He made a valuable contribution as secretary of the linguistic society ''Met Tijd en Vlijt'' and of the Social Speakers Union ( Dutch: ''Sociale Sprekersbond''). He became president of the East Flemish student guild and founder-conductor of the student orchestra, in which he played the piano and violin himself. From 1901 to 1908 he was editor-in-chief of '' Ons Leven'' and president of the ''Vlaamsch Verbond''. Zulte () is a Belgian municipality located in Flanders and in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Machelen, and Zulte proper. In 2021, Zulte had a total population of 15,843. The total area is 32.52 km2. The town used to have its own beer since 1891 (simply called Zulte) but today they are part of Alken-Maes breweries. The main football club from Zulte merged with KSV Waregem to form a team called SV Zulte Waregem that plays in the Belgian Pro League as of 2006. Karel Van De Woestijne
Carolus Petrus Eduardus Maria "Karel" van de Woestijne (; Ghent, 10 March 1878 – Zwijnaarde, 24 August 1929) was a Flemish writer and brother of the painter Gustave van de Woestijne. He went to highschool at the ''Koninklijk Athenaeum'' (E:Royal Athenaeum) at the Ottogracht in Ghent. He also studied Germanic philology at the University of Ghent, where he came into contact with French symbolism. He lived at Sint-Martens-Latem from April 1900 up to January 1904, and from April 1905 up to November 1906. Here he wrote ''Laetemsche brieven over de lente'', for his friend Adolf Herckenrath (1901). In 1907 he moved to Brussels, and in 1915 he moved to Pamel, where he wrote ''De leemen torens'' together with Herman Teirlinck. From 1906 he was correspondent of the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant in Brussels. Between 1920 and 1929 he taught history of Dutch literature at the University of Ghent. Vlierbeek Abbey
Vlierbeek Abbey ( nl, Abdij van Vlierbeek) is a former Benedictine abbey to the north-east of Leuven in Belgium, in the sub-district Kessel-Lo. History On the abbey site in 1127 a priory was founded by Affligem Abbey, to whom Godfrey I of Louvain had given the land on the Vlierbeek two years previously. In 1163 or 1165 the priory was elevated to the status of an abbey. The Benedictines cultivated the surrounding land, and played a great role in the spiritual and intellectual development of the area. Over the next few centuries they worked almost constantly on the abbey complex, having often to repair or rebuild what had been destroyed by fire or conflict. In 1170 a stone church in Romanesque style replaced the first church, which was made of clay. In 1572 the abbey was burnt down by the troops of William of Orange. Edmond De Goeyse
Dr. Edmond de Goeyse (1 October 1907 – 21 December 1998) was a Flemish student leader during the 1920s and 1930s. He was born in Antwerp. He founded the pioneer student fraternity Bezem Lovania Brussel in 1925 and in 1927 he tried to reestablish the German fraternity K.A.V. Lovania Leuven, affiliated with the Cartellverband der katholischen deutschen Studentenverbindungen. In 1929, he united all Flemish student clubs in the Seniorenkonvent (SK), a subdivision of the Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond (KVHV) and wrote the Belgian version of the clubcodex, currently still in use by most students from Flanders. Katholiek Vlaams Hoogstudentenverbond (KVHV) or the Catholic Flemish Students' Union is a political student society which concerns Flemish nationalism and conservatism. It accepts male and female members and has chapters in Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp, Brussels, Aalst and Sint-Katelijne-Waver. Previously KVHV had chapters in Kortrijk, Ostend, and Mechelen. Arthur Meulemans
Arthur Meulemans (19 May 1884 in Aarschot – 29 June 1966 in Etterbeek) was a Belgian composer, conductor, and music teacher. Biography Meulemans’ father was an artisan and a music lover who composed dance music. As a child, Arthur Meulemans received his first music lessons from his father and his uncle Jan, who taught him to play the piccolo. He also got violin classes from a certain mister Single, and piano lessons from Ernest Maréchal. Alfons van den Eynde, a student of Peter Benoit, gave the boy introductory classes in harmony, counterpoint, and fugue. Meulemans studied at the Lemmensinstituut in Mechelen with, among others, Edgar Tinel, Aloys Desmet, and Oscar Depuydt. After completing his final exams, he became a teacher at this institution and remained so until 1914.
