Jeannine Meulemans
Jeannine Meulemans (born 30 March 1951 in Mechelen) was Belgium's first great international women's judo champion. She is 10-fold Belgian judo champion who nationally remained unbeaten, including in those contests she fought before weight classes were implemented. Internationally, the only contests she lost were due to injury or doubtful referee action. She is considered as the finest female technical judoka ever produced by Belgian judo. Close to her retirement, she won a bronze medal during the first Women's Judo World Championships in 1980 in New York. Career Meulemans took up judo in 1966 at age 15 at the ''Judo and Jujutsu Academy Bushido-Kwai'' the oldest judo club in Belgium, founded and led by Felix De Smedt (1923-2012) In 1970 she obtained her shodan blackbelt with the ''Belgian Judo Federation'' (BJB). Kōdōkan
The , or ''Kōdōkan'' (講道館), is the headquarters of the worldwide judo community. The ''kōdōkan'' was founded in 1882 by Kanō Jigorō, the founder of judo, and is now an eight-story building in Tokyo. Etymology Literally, ''kō'' (講) means "to lecture", ''dō'' (道) means "way," and ''kan'' (館) is "a public building". Together it can be translated as "a place for the study of the way." Function The Kodokan Institute offers classes for those who want to master judo. The program is authorized as a non-regular school by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Its courses include the theories and practice of judo, and matters of general education. The course is divided into two parts: a general course for novices, and special courses for those who have completed the general course or its equivalent. Ichiro Abe
was a Japanese judoka. He was head of the Promotions Panel at the Kodokan and former international chairperson of the All Nippon Judo Federation. He was one of only fifteen judoka to have attained Kodokan 10th dan rank, having been promoted at the New Year Kagami biraki Ceremony, 8 January 2006 along with Toshiro Daigo and Yoshimi Osawa. Marcel Clause
Marcel Clause (April 4, 1927 – April 27, 2004) was a leading Belgian judo educator, international referee and former international judo athlete and former national coach. He was one of only three non-Japanese people ever to be awarded the high rank of judo 8th dan by the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, Japan. Early life Clause was born in Lessines, a Walloon municipality in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. He took up judo at the relatively late age of 23. His teacher was Robert Plomb, at the time a brown belt (1st kyu). Before, Clause had been a middle-distance runner. Career Clause's technical skills in judo rapidly progressed after having encountered Ichiro Abe, a Japanese Kodokan delegate to Europe, who in 1954 became the new Technical Director of the Belgian Judo Federation. Ingrid Berghmans (born 24 August 1961 in Koersel), also known as Ingrid Vallot, is a judoka from Belgium who has eight times been named Belgian Sportswoman of the Year. A former world title holder, she is also an Olympic competitor.
