Jean Gabilou
Jean Gabilou (born Gabriel Lewis Laughlin on 28 February 1944) is a Tahiti based singer who represented France in the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest. Early life Born into a family of ten children, he grew up in Papeete, Tahiti until the age of 13, before moving to Faa'a with his family. He is of Polynesian descent. In 1963, a friend, Raoul Robert, asked him to sing a melody at the Matavai Hotel. He then interpreted two waltzes and the religious song "When The Saints Go Marching In" in rock version. The same evening he received his first contract, for 60 francs an hour. He first worked with the Vernaudon brothers for two years, then started performing at the Pitate Club with the Hars Brothers for another two years. Laughlin was then approached by Petiot, a guitarist for a group called The Barefoot Boys, which he joined at the age of 23. However, in 1968, Laughlin left the group. Lena Valaitis
Lena Valaitis (born 7 September 1943) is a Lithuanian–German schlager singer who had her greatest success during the 1970s and 1980s. She finished second at the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest. Early life and education Valaitis was born on 7 September 1943 in Memel, which was in the reclaimed Memel Territory of East Prussia by Germany. Her father, a soldier of the Wehrmacht, was killed during World War II. At the end of the war, Valaitis, her mother, and her brother arrived as refugees in West Germany. She first attended Volksschule in Memmingen and then the "Lithuanian Gymnasium Hüttenfeld" in Hüttenfeld, Hesse. Valaitis left for training with the Deutsche Bundespost in Frankfurt, where she received private singing lessons. Personal life Valaitis has one son, Marco (born 1973), from her first marriage. Vivre (Guy Bonnet Song)
France was represented by Guy Bonnet, with the song "Vivre", at the 1983 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 23 April in Munich. Bonnet had previously represented France in the 1970 contest in Amsterdam. Before Eurovision National final Broadcaster Antenne 2 took over responsibility for French Eurovision participation in 1983, after the country had been absent from the 1982 contest when previous broadcaster TF1 opted out, citing the facile nature of the music on offer in Eurovision as they perceived it. Antenne 2 decided to choose their first entry via a broadcast national final. The national final was held on 20 March 1983, hosted by Jean-Pierre Foucault and 1977 contest winner Marie Myriam. Fourteen songs took part with the winner chosen by a panel of TV viewers who were telephoned and asked to vote on the songs. Guy Bonnet
Guy Bonnet is an author, composer, and singer, born in Avignon, France in 1945. He wrote the lyrics and composed the music for the French entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1968 (performed by Isabelle Aubret). In 1970 he participated in the Eurovision song contest for France with "Marie-Blanche" coming 4th out of twelve contestants. In 1983 he represented France in Eurovision again with " Vivre" (finishing eighth). He wrote and composed songs for many artists including Mireille Mathieu, Sylvie Vartan, Franck Fernandel and Massilia Sound System Massilia Sound System is a reggae band formed in Marseille, France, in 1984. The Eurovision Song Contest 1981 was the 26th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Dublin, Ireland, following the country's victory at the with the song "What's Another Year" by Johnny Logan. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (RTÉ), the contest was held at the RDS Simmonscourt on 4 April 1981, and was hosted by Irish television journalist Doireann Ní Bhriain. Twenty countries participated in the contest, equalling the record of the 1978 edition. Cyprus made their début this year, while Israel and Yugoslavia both returned to the competition, after their one-year and five-year absences, respectively.
