Jean Cole
Jean Cole Harris (May 13, 1926 – August 8, 2015) was an American reporter and columnist. As a journalist at the ''Boston Record American'', Harris, along with Loretta McLaughlin, covered the Boston Strangler murders in 1962. With McLaughlin, she was the first journalist to connect the murders and break the story about the serial killer. Early life and education Born Jean Marie Cole in 1926 in Scituate, Massachusetts to Margaret Cole, a telephone switchboard operator, and Howard Cole, the first full-time firefighter and later firefighting chief of Scituate, Harris was the second of six children. In 1944, she graduated from Scituate High School and was accepted to the United States Army Nurse Corps at Quincy City Hospital. Scituate, Massachusetts
Scituate () is a seacoast town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States, on the South Shore, midway between Boston and Plymouth. The population was 19,063 at the 2020 census. History The Wampanoag and their neighbors have inhabited the lands Scituate now stands on for thousands of years. The name Scituate is derived from " satuit", the Wampanoag term for cold brook, which refers to a brook that runs to the inner harbor of the town. In 1710, several European colonizers emigrated to Rhode Island and founded Scituate, Rhode Island, naming it after their previous hometown. European colonization brought a group of people from Plymouth about 1627, who were joined by colonizers from the county of Kent in England. Combat Zone, Boston
"Combat Zone" was the name given in the 1960s to the adult entertainment district in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Centered on Washington Street between Boylston Street and Kneeland Street, the area was once the site of many strip clubs, peep shows, X-rated movie theaters, and adult bookstores. It had a reputation for crime, including prostitution. In 1974, in an attempt to contain the spread of adult businesses, the Boston Redevelopment Authority officially designated the Combat Zone as the city's adult entertainment district. For a variety of reasons, such as rising property values and the introduction of home video technology, most of the adult businesses in the area have since closed, and the "Combat Zone" moniker has become obsolete.
