Jean Brodie-Hall
Jean, Lady Brodie-Hall, , FAILA (15 August 1925 – July 2023) was an Australian landscape architect. She was a founding member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and had a long and distinguished career in Western Australia before her retirement in 1981. She was acknowledged as a leader in West Australian landscape architecture and received a national award for landscape architecture in 1990. Early life Jean Estelle Slatyer was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia on 15 August 1925, daughter of Thomas Henry Slatyer and his wife Jean Estelle MacKenzie. She was the middle one of five siblings, having two older and two younger brothers. Brodie-Hall studied nursing at the Children's Hospital (now Princess Margaret Hospital), working in London and Melbourne, before settling back in Perth with her family in the late 1940s. The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) is the Australian non profit professional institute formed to serve the mutual interests of Australian landscape architects. Kwinana Nickel Refinery
The Kwinana Nickel Refinery is a nickel refinery in East Rockingham and Kwinana Beach, Western Australia. The refinery is operated by BHP and part of its Nickel West operations. Having originally been built by WMC Resources, it changed ownership in 2005 when BHP acquired WMC. Operations Kwinana is part of BHP's Nickel West operations, which includes, apart from Kwinana, the Leinster Nickel Mine, the Mount Keith Mine, the Kambalda Nickel Concentrator and the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. At Kwinana, nickel matte refined into nickel powder and briquettes at a grade of 99.8 percent nickel. In late 2021, a nickel sulphate plant opened at the refinery, the first in Australia. Sir Laurence "Brodie" Brodie-Hall (10 June 1910 – 1 October 2006) was an influential figure in the mining industry of Western Australia (WA). Early life Brodie-Hall was born in London and emigrated to Australia in 1924, leaving his parents. He worked as a farm hand in New South Wales and moved to WA in 1927. He co-bought a garage business but went broke during the Great Depression. Early mining career He was an underground gold miner in WA's Murchison. In 1934 he joined Western Mining Corporation's Triton mine near Cue as a machine miner. Next he went to Kalgoorlie, took a shift job at the Kalgurli Ore Treatment Company's plant and began a part-time course at the WA School of Mines. On the Goldfields he played the violin, sang and was involved in amateur theatricals. In 1939 he worked at the Emperor Mine in Fiji.
