Jean-Marie Berckmans
Jean-Marie Henri Berckmans (28 October 1953, in Leopoldsburg – 31 August 2008, in Antwerp) was a Belgian cult writer. Born in Leopoldsburg, Berckmans was a punk poet who struggled with mental illness. He left Belgium to become a businessman in Italy but he became manic. He then returned to Belgium where he resumed his literary career. His work has been compared with William S. Burroughs and Robert Crumb. Nicknamed ''Pafke'', in reference to his chain-smoking habit, he often wrote about the night and night people. He died in 2008 due to his alcohol problems. Leopoldsburg
Leopoldsburg (; french: Bourg-Léopold, ; li, Leopolsbörch) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1, 2006, Leopoldsburg had a total population of 14,403. The total area is 22.49 km² (8.68 sq mi) which gives a population density of 640 inhabitants per km² (1,658.7/sq mi). It is situated near the important military base at Beverloo Camp. The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Leopoldsburg proper and Heppen. Punk Literature
Punk literature (also called punk lit and, rarely, punklit) is literature related to the punk subculture. The attitude and ideologies of punk rock gave rise to distinctive characteristics in the writing it manifested. It has influenced the transgressional fiction literary genre, the cyberpunk genre and their derivatives. Robert Crumb
Robert Dennis Crumb (; born August 30, 1943) is an American cartoonist and musician who often signs his work R. Crumb. His work displays a nostalgia for American folk culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and satire of contemporary American culture. Crumb is a prolific artist and contributed to many of the seminal works of the underground comix movement in the 1960s, including being a founder of the first successful underground comix publication, ''Zap Comix'', contributing to all 16 issues. He was additionally contributing to the ''East Village Other'' and many other publications, including a variety of one-off and anthology comics. Canvas (Belgium)
Canvas is a Belgian television channel of the Flemish public broadcasting organisation Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT). Specialising in both original and adaptations from western Europe and North America, the channel offers: in-depth news and current affairs, non-mainstream entertainment, documentaries, arthouse films, other cultural programming, and most recently additional children's programming. Flemish (''Vlaams'') is a Low Franconian dialect cluster of the Dutch language. It is sometimes referred to as Flemish Dutch (), Belgian Dutch ( ), or Southern Dutch ().
