Jean-Denis Bredin
Jean-Denis Bredin (born Jean-Denis Hirsch: 17 May 1929 – 1 September 2021) was a French attorney and founding partner of the firm Bredin Prat. He was widely admired as an author-commentator, both for his novels and for his non-fiction works, with a particular focus on recent and contemporary history. On 15 June 1989, he was elected to membership of the Académie Française, becoming the twentieth occupant of seat 3, which had been vacated through the death of Marguerite Yourcenar. His daughter, Frédérique Bredin, served between 2013 and 2019 as President of the French National Center of Cinematography and the moving image. Bredin died on 1 September 2021 aged 92. Plon is a French book publishing company, founded in 1852 by Henri Plon and his two brothers. The Plon family were Walloons coming from Nivelles, Belgium. One of their ancestors is probably the Danish typographer Jehan Plon who lived at the end of the 16th century. History The ''Éditions Plon'' were created in 1852, by Henri Plon and his two brothers. They were given the title of ''Imprimeur de l’Empereur'' (Imperial publisher) and published the correspondence of Louis XIII of France, Marie Antoinette and Napoleon I of France. During the 1920s the house published the novels of the Jewish-Algerian writer Elissa Rhaïs. Plon published Quid, an encyclopedia, from 1963 to 1974. Thierry Lévy (13 January 1945 – 30 January 2017) was a high-profile French criminal defence lawyer who spent his career in a state of permanent opposition to the French legal establishment. Admitted to the Paris bar in 1969, he went on to appear in a succession of well publicised criminal trials during the ensuing three and a half decades. His father had been a journalist and press proprietor who was not infrequently supportive of nationalist and other right-wing movements.
