Jean-Baptiste Coclers
Jean-Baptiste Coclers (Maastricht, 14 October 1696 – Liège, 23 May 1772) was a Southern Netherlands, Southern Netherlandish portrait painter and a painter of floral still lifes and historical subjects. Life Jean-Baptiste Pierre Coclers was born in Maastricht in 1696. He was the son and pupil of the Liège painter Philippe Coclers who then lived in Maastricht but in 1702 moved back to Liège. From 1713 till 1729 he studied in Rome with Sebastiano Conca and Marco Benefial, and worked together with the landscape painter Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni. After his Italian years, Coclers worked some time in Marseille (1729–31), where he painted a large fresco in the bourse (destroyed). From 1731 till 1738 he worked in Maastricht, after which he established himself in Liège, where he was made court painter of the List of bishops and prince-bishops of Liège, prince-bishops Georges-Louis de Berghes, John Theodore of Bavaria and Charles-Nicolas d'Oultremont. Johann Theodor of Bavaria (3 September 1703 – 27 January 1763) was a cardinal, Prince-Bishop of Regensburg, Prince-Bishop of Freising, and Prince-Bishop of Liège. Early life Johann Theodor was a son of Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria and of his wife Theresa Kunegunda Sobieska (daughter of King John III Sobieski of Poland). He was educated at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria and at the University of Siena. Ecclesiastical career Johann Theodor was elected bishop of Regensburg by its cathedral chapter on 29 July 1719, at age 15. The election received papal confirmation 14 October 1721. He was elected coadjutor bishop of Freising by its cathedral chapter on 5 November 1723. Curtius Museum
The Curtius Museum (''Musée Curtius'') is a museum of archaeology and decorative arts, located on the bank of the river Meuse in Liège, Belgium, classified as a ''Major Heritage'' of Wallonia. It was built sometime between 1597 and 1610 as a private mansion for Jean Curtius, industrialist and munitions supplier to the Spanish army. With its alternating layers of red brick and natural stone, and its cross-mullioned windows, the building typifies the regional style known as the Mosan (or Meuse) Renaissance. After a 50 million euro redevelopment, the museum reopened as the Grand Curtius (''Le Grand Curtius'') in March 2009, now housing the merged collections of four former museums: the ''museum of archeology'', the ''museum of weaponry'', the ''museum of decorative arts'', and the ''museum of religious art and Mosan art''. Bemelen
Bemelen (; li, Bieëmele ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is part of the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten, and lies about 5 km east of Maastricht. The village was first mentioned in 1096 as Bemele. The etymology is unknown. Bemelen is a village on the eastern flank of the Maas along the Roman road from Maastricht to Aachen. Bonnefanten Museum
The Bonnefanten Museum is a museum of fine art in Maastricht, Netherlands. History The museum was founded in 1884 as the historical and archaeological museum of the Dutch province of Limburg. The name Bonnefanten Museum is derived from the French 'bons enfants' ('good children'), the popular name of a former convent that housed the museum from 1951 until 1978. In 1995, the museum moved to its present location, a former industrial site named 'Céramique'. The new building was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi. With its rocket-shaped cupola overlooking the river Maas, it is one of Maastricht's most prominent modern buildings. Since 1999, the museum has become exclusively an art museum. Born in Liège, Coclers was the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Coclers, who died during her childhood. Louis Bernard Coclers
Louis Bernard Coclers (1740 in Maastricht or Liège – 20 April 1817 in Liège) was a Southern Netherlands, Southern Netherlandish portrait painter and engraver who worked mainly in Liège, Maastricht, Leiden and Amsterdam. Life Louis Bernard Coclers was born in Liège or Maastricht in 1740. He was instructed by his father, Jean-Baptiste Coclers. He spent three years in Italy, and after his return he settled in Maastricht, later in Nijmegen, Dordrecht and Leiden (from 1769 onwards). Compromised politically, he left Holland in 1787, and went to Paris, where he remained several years. He again returned to Holland and resided in Amsterdam, where he painted portraits and engraved cabinet pictures in the manner of Frans van Mieris the Elder, Gabriël Metsu, and Godfried Schalcken, which he exhibited regularly from 1808 to 1813. Charles-Nicolas D'Oultremont
Charles-Nicolas-Alexandre d'Oultremont (26 June 1716 – 22 October 1771) was Prince-Bishop of Liège from 20 April 1763 to his death in 1771. He was the eighth child of Jean-François-Paul-Emile, Count of Oultremont and of the Holy Roman Empire, and Marie-Isabelle of Bavaria, Countess of Warfusée and Druynen and Baroness of Schagen. He was born, lived and died in the castle of Warfusée (now within the municipality of Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse). Charles of Oultremont studied at the college of Reims and at Louis-le-Grand in Paris. He was nominated Canon of the Cathedral of Liège by the Pope in 1733. He was ordained Deacon on 22 April 1764, and priest two days later. Upon the death of Prince-Bishop Jean-Théodore of Bavaria in January 1763, Prince Clemens of Saxony, only son of the King of Poland, Frederick Augustus III, applied to become the next prince-bishop.
