Jayson Gonzales
Jayson Gonzales (born 2 May 1969, Quezon City) is a Filipino chess grandmaster (2008). He played for the Philippines in the Chess Olympiads of 2004 and 2008. In 1998, he won the Southern California Open. In 2001, he tied for 4–5th with Alan Sayson in the Philippine Chess Championship. In 2004, tied for 3rd–4th with Sergei Tiviakov in the Calvia Open and came third behind Jaan Ehlvest and John Fedorowicz in the 88th Marshall Chess Club Championship in New York. In 2008, he tied for 2nd–3rd with Ashot Nadanian in the 1st Leg ASEAN Circuit Chess Tournament in Tarakan and came second in the 1st Subic International Open Tournament. On the May 2012 FIDE list, he has an Elo rating of 2405. 38th Chess Olympiad
The 38th Chess Olympiad (german: Die 38. Schacholympiade), organized by FIDE and comprising an open and a women's tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place from 12 to 25 November 2008 in Dresden, Germany. There were 146 teams in the open event and 111 in the women's event. In total, 1277 players were registered. Both tournament sections were officiated by international arbiter Ignatius Leong (Singapore). In a change from recent Olympiads, the number of rounds of the Swiss system were reduced from 13 to 11 with accelerated pairings. For the first time, the women's division, like the open division, was played over four boards per round, with each team allowed one alternate for a total of five players. Ashot Nadanian
Ashot Nadanian (sometimes transliterated as Nadanyan; hy, Աշոտ Նադանյան; born 19 September 1972) is an Armenian chess International Master (1997), chess theoretician and chess coach. His highest achievements have been in opening theory and coaching. Two opening variations are named after him: the Nadanian Variation in the Grünfeld Defence and the Nadanian Attack in the Queen's Pawn Opening. He began coaching at the age of 22 and has brought up three grandmasters. He has coached the national teams of Kuwait and Singapore and was awarded the titles Honoured Coach of Armenia in 1998 and FIDE Senior Trainer in 2017. Since 2011, he has been a permanent second of Levon Aronian. Although a strong player who competed in the 1996 Chess Olympiad and narrowly failed to qualify for the 1999 FIDE World Chess Championship, he has never fulfilled his potential. The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system, but is also used as a rating system in association football, American football, baseball, basketball, pool, table tennis, and various board games and esports. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. A player whose rating is 100 points greater than their opponent's is expected to score 64%; if the difference is 200 points, then the expected score for the stronger player is 76%. John Peter Fedorowicz (born September 27, 1958) is an American chess player and chess writer from The Bronx, New York. He learned to play chess in 1972, inspired by the Fischer–Spassky World Championship Match coverage on TV and as an enthusiastic youngster, made rapid progress to become co-winner of the 1977 U.S. Junior Championship (with Kenneth Regan) and outright winner in 1978. Fedorowicz continued to impress and in 1984 tied for third place in the U.S. Championships, tied for second place at Hastings in 1984–85, and tied for second place at Dortmund in 1986. He represented the U.S. at the 1986 Dubai Chess Olympiad and scored well, earning himself the Grandmaster (GM) title the same year.
