The Japan national rugby sevens team participates in competitions such as the World Rugby Sevens Series and the Rugby World Cup Sevens. Tournament history Summer Olympic Games Rugby World Cup Sevens Asian Games Hong Kong Sevens Japan won the Plate match at the 1980 and 1999 Hong Kong Sevens. In the 2007 Hong Kong Sevens, Japan reached Bowl semi-finals (19th place), where they lost against France; previously they had beaten Asian rivals China and Chinese Taipei. In 2008, they lost all four matches versus South Africa, Argentina, Russia and Hong Kong. Japan won in 2009 against China and Sri Lanka, after which they lost the Bowl semi-finals versus Portugal. In 2010 they beat Hong Kong but were defeated by Scotland in Bowl quarter-finals, so they ended 13th. Yusaku Kuwazuru
is a Japanese rugby union player. He plays for the Japanese club Coca-Cola Red Sparks in the Top League. He was part of the squad that played at the 2014 Hong Kong Sevens and won the World Series Qualifier for the 2014–15 Sevens World Series. He captained the squad that won the 2015 ARFU Men's Sevens Championships to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics. 2014 Hong Kong Sevens
The 2014 Hong Kong Sevens was the 39th edition of the Hong Kong Sevens and the seventh tournament of the 2013–2014 Sevens World Series. It took place at its long-time home, Hong Kong Stadium. The Cup title was claimed by New Zealand, with South Africa, Scotland and Kenya respectively claiming the lower-level Plate, Bowl and Shield. Japan won the World Series Core Team Qualifier to earn promotion to "core" status for the 2014–15 series. Format The teams were drawn into four pools of four teams each. The 2013 Hong Kong Sevens was the 38th edition of the Hong Kong Sevens and the sixth tournament of the 2012–13 IRB Sevens World Series. It was hosted by its long-time home, Hong Kong Stadium. The 2012 Hong Kong Sevens was the 37th edition of the Hong Kong Sevens tournament and the sixth tournament of the 2011–12 IRB Sevens World Series. The host stadium was the Hong Kong Stadium. Fiji won the title by defeating New Zealand 35–28 in the final. Format The teams were divided into pools of four teams, who played a round-robin within the pool. Points were awarded in each pool on a different scale from that used in most rugby tournaments: 3 for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 for a loss. However, new for 2012 was what was described by organisers as two separate 12-team competitions, called Competition 1 and Competition 2. The 2011 Hong Kong Sevens was a seven-a-side rugby union tournament, part of the 2010–11 IRB Sevens World Series. The competition was being held from 25–27 March in at Hong Kong Stadium in Hong Kong and featured 24 teams. Teams The following teams participated: Security Following an incident in 2010 when one spectator invaded the pitch, climbed onto the crossbars at the south end of the stadium before dodging back into the stands and disappearing, organisers stepped up security and announced a zero-tolerance policy of invaders in 2011. Out of concerns for safety, the local Rugby Union sent out notification that anyone entering the playing area who should not enter would be arrested by the police, instead of just being ejected from the arena. 2007 Hong Kong Sevens
The 2007 Hong Kong Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament held on 30 March until 1 April 2007 in Hong Kong at the 40,000 capacity Hong Kong Stadium. The event, the fifth leg of the 2006-07 IRB Sevens World Series, was won by Samoa. The Format The Hong Kong Sevens is unique among the IRB Sevens events in several ways. First, because 24 teams compete instead of the 16 that compete in all other series events, the Hong Kong Sevens is divided into six pools instead of the normal four. Also because of the expanded number of teams, the points system for this tournament is also different. Most significantly, the winning team picks up 30 points instead of the normal 20, and the runner-up earns 24 points instead of the normal 16. Finally, only three trophies are awarded instead of the four in a normal IRB Sevens event. The Shield is not awarded, leaving the Bowl, Plate, and Cup. Considered the premier tournament on the World Rugby Sevens Series competition, the Hong Kong Sevens is currently the seventh tournament on the World Series calendar (following the Canada Sevens.
