Japan Professional Baseball Players Association
The is the players' union that represents Japanese baseball players and their interests in Nippon Professional Baseball. The organization was incorporated in 1980 and was approved as a labor union in 1985. The current union chairman is Ginjiro Sumitani and the current institute chairman is Yohei Oshima. The JPBPA orchestrated the two-day players' strike during the 2004 NPB realignment. Japan ( ja, 日本, or , and formally , ''Nihonkoku'') is an island country in East Asia. Ginjiro Sumitani
is a Japanese professional baseball player for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). He previously played in NPB for the Saitama Seibu Lions and Yomiuri Giants. Career Seibu Lions/Saitama Seibu Lions In the 2005 Nippon Professional Baseball draft, the Seibu Lions selected Sumitani with the first selection. On November 15, 2005, he signed with the Lions. On March 25, 2006, Sumitani made his NPB debut, and on March 29, he hit a grand slam off of D.J. Carrasco of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, and became the fifth NPB player drafted out of high school to hit a grand slam in his first season. He also became the first rookie out of high school to homer twice in a game since Hideki Matsui did so 13 years previous. He finished his rookie season with a .181/.193/.290 slash line. Nippon Professional Baseball
or NPB is the highest level of baseball in Japan. Locally, it is often called , meaning ''Professional Baseball''. Outside Japan, it is often just referred to as "Japanese baseball". The roots of the league can be traced back to the formation of the in Tokyo, founded in 1934, and the original circuit for the sport in the Empire two years later – Japanese Baseball League (1936–1949), and continued to play even through the final years of World War II. 2004 NPB Realignment
The 2004 Nippon Professional Baseball realignment was a series of events that occurred during the 2004 Nippon Professional Baseball season that changed the landscape of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). In June of that season, the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes and the Orix BlueWave announced that, due to financial difficulties, the two teams planned to merge into one for the start of the 2005 season. Both teams were in the Pacific League (PL), and a merger between the two would result in a team imbalance with the PL's opposing league, the Central League (CL). Soon, it was announced that a second merger was being explored between two of the remaining four PL teams. With the possibility of the PL losing a second team, discussion about possibly restructuring NPB's two-league system into one ten-team league began.
