Janet Cone
Janet Cone (born December 7, 1955) is an American college athletic director for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, a position she has held since 2004. In 2015, she became a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men's basketball committee. She has also been a women's basketball coach for several teams, including Saint Leo University, Western Carolina University, Mars Hill College and Samford University, as well as an AD for some of those. Background Cone was born in Summerville, South Carolina, to Joseph and Florence Cone, who have operated a logging business since 1954. Cone attended Summerville High School, playing basketball for four years. In 1978, she graduated ''magna cum laude'' with a bachelor's degree from Furman University, where she played basketball and field hockey. An athletic director (commonly "athletics director" or "AD") is an administrator at many American clubs or institutions, such as colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, who oversees the work of coaches and related staff involved in athletic programs. Position at institution Modern athletic directors are often in a precarious position, especially at the larger institutions. Although technically in charge of all of the coaches, they are often far less well-compensated and also less famous, with few having their own television and radio programs as many coaches now do. In attempting to deal with misconduct by coaches, they often find their efforts trumped by a coach's powerful connections, particularly if the coach is an established figure with a long-term winning record. Seed (sports)
A seed is a competitor or team in a sport or other tournament who is given a preliminary ranking for the purposes of the draw. Players/teams are "planted" into the bracket in a manner that is typically intended so that the best do not meet until later in the competition, usually based on regular season. The term was first used in tennis, and is based on the idea of laying out a tournament ladder by arranging slips of paper with the names of players on them the way seeds or seedlings are arranged in a garden: smaller plants up front, larger ones behind. Mars Hill Lions
The Mars Hill Lions are the athletic teams that represent Mars Hill University, located in Mars Hill, North Carolina, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Lions are full members of the South Atlantic Conference, home to 18 of its 21 athletics programs. The men's and women's swimming programs are members of the single-sport Appalachian Swimming Conference, and the acrobatics and tumbling team is an associate member of Conference Carolinas.
