Jane Derby
Jane Derby (May 17, 1895 – August 7, 1965) was an American fashion designer. Born Jeanette Fleming Barr in Rocky Mount, Virginia in 1895, Derby first worked as an apprentice designer before opening her own business in 1936 in New York. She later opened Jane Derby, Inc., in 1938, which she ran continuously until her death in 1965 (with the exception of during World War II). She was one of the first fashion designers to show the short dinner dress. In 1951 she received the Winnie award of the Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards. She was married to Arthur Lawrence Derby from 1915 until his death in 1961, and in December 1964 remarried to Ross Cuthbert (1892-1970), a former Olympic ice hockey player and retired lieutenant colonel of the British Army. Derby had children, including a son, Arthur (1916-1944), who was killed in action in World War II. Derby died in Bermuda in August 1965, aged 70. Rocky Mount, Virginia
Rocky Mount is a town in and the county seat of Franklin County, Virginia, United States. The town is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area, and had a population of 4,903 as of the 2020 census. It is located in the Roanoke Region of Virginia. History Robert Hill built a block house (fortified residence and trading post) in the 1740s, for trading with Native Americans. English settlers did not arrive until 1760. They named Rocky Mount for a steep cliff near the town. The area originally consisted of two adjacent villages, Rocky Mount and Mount Pleasant. Washington Iron Furnace was built by James Callaway and Jeremiah Early; its site was on what is now Main Street. It was operated by Callaway's heirs and Peter Saunders until 1850, when it was damaged by a flood. Repairs and rebuilding were stopped by the breakout of Civil War. Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards
The Coty American Fashion Critics' Awards (awarded 1943–1984) were created in 1942 by the cosmetics and perfume company Coty, Inc. to promote and celebrate American fashion, and encourage design during the Second World War. In 1985, the Coty Awards were discontinued with the last presentation of the awards in September 1984; the CFDA Awards fulfill a similar role. Ross Cuthbert (ice Hockey)
Cuthbert Ross Cuthbert (February 6, 1892 — January 19, 1971) was a Canada ice hockey player who competed in the 1924 Winter Olympics and 1928 Winter Olympics. Early life Cuthbert was born in Calgary, Northwest Territories. He travelled to Britain as part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served in France during World War II. Career At the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, he was a member of the British ice hockey team which won the bronze medal. He then appeared at the 1926 Ice Hockey European Championship and, two years later, finished fourth with the British team in the 1928 Olympic tournament in St. Moritz. At the club level, Cuthbert initially played for Princes Ice Hockey Club. He later joined the United Services Portsmouth Hockey Club. Oscar De La Renta
Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo (22 July 1932 – 20 October 2014), known professionally as Oscar de la Renta, was a Dominican fashion designer. Born in Santo Domingo, he was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo. De la Renta became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy. He worked for Lanvin and Balmain. His eponymous fashion house has boutiques around the world including in Harrods of London and Madison Avenue in New York.
