Jan Van Pee
Jan van Pee (1630, Amsterdam – 1710, Antwerp), was a Dutch Golden Age art dealer and genre painter. Biography According to Houbraken he was the son of the Amsterdam art dealer Emanuel van Pee, a man with a title of lower nobility, whose father Justus van Pee of Brussels had been the private secretary of Margaret of Parma. Justus van Pee had been trained as a painter but was too nearsighted for the work. As a private secretary he astonished everyone by being able to read letters in the dark better than anyone else, despite his near-sightedness. Though his father had earned a title, there was little inheritance left for Emanuel when he died, so Emanuel started an art dealership to make a living, and moved to Amsterdam, where Jan van Pee was born and where he starting working for his father at a young age making copies of small cabinet paintings (" Dozynwerk", or "works of a dozen"). Gerrit Van Uylenburgh
Gerrit van Uylenburgh (c. 1625 – 1679), or Gerrit Uylenburgh, was a Dutch Golden Age painter and art-dealer. He was the eldest son of Hendrick van Uylenburgh and took over the family art-dealing business after Hendrick's death and burial in the Westerkerk church in 1661. This business, then in a house on Lauriergracht, formerly owned by Govaert Flinck, played a key role in the art world of the Dutch Golden Age. Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence. The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself almost entirely, a task in which it was very largely successful. Theodor Van Pee
Theodorus van Pee (1668–1746) was an 18th-century painter and art dealer from the Northern Netherlands. Biography Born in Amsterdam in 1668 or 1669, he was a son of the painter Jan van Pee and his wife Hendrika. His father moved to Antwerp when Theodor was still a child, and the boy was brought up in the household of his maternal grandparents in Amsterdam. At the age of eighteen he was apprenticed to a jeweller in order to qualify for admission to the Goldsmiths’ Guild in the city but, when twenty, he sought his father’s permission to abandon his articles and train as a painter. His father initially withheld consent, counselling that the life of an artist was precarious and that "the golden wings of Mercury offer better shelter than the flimsy wings of Saint Luke" (Luke being the patron saint of painters). Trekschuit (, literally ''"tug-boat"'', but true meaning ''"tugged-boat"'') is an old style of sail- and horse-drawn boat specific to the Netherlands, where it was used for centuries as a means of passenger traffic between cities along ''trekvaarten'', or tow-canals. History The first trekschuit 'sailed' in 1632 between Amsterdam and Haarlem and could carry 30 passengers. The ''trekvaart'' or canal was dug in a straight line to facilitate an easy pulling process and to guarantee the shortest route. The passengers needed to step out and change boats in Halfweg, which means "halfway". This is how the town of Halfweg was formed.
