Jamila Abdallah Taha Al-Shanti
Jamila Abdallah Taha al-Shanti ( ar, جميلة عبد الله طه الشنطي; 15 March 1955 – 19 October 2023) was a Palestinian politician who was a member of Hamas and a former member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. She was killed in an Israeli strike on Gaza on 19 October 2023, during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. Early life and education Al-Shanti was born on 15 March 1955. She held a PhD in English. Career Al-Shanti was a member of Hamas and was the founder of the group's women's organization. She was the most senior woman among Hamas deputies elected in 2006 since she was third on its list and became minister in 2011. She worked as a faculty member at the Islamic University in Gaza. Palestinian Legislative Council
The Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) is the unicameral legislature of the Palestinian Authority, elected by the Palestinian residents of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It currently comprises 132 members, elected from 16 electoral districts of the Palestinian Authority. The PLC has a quorum requirement of two-thirds, and since 2006 Hamas and Hamas-affiliated members have held 74 of the 132 seats in the PLC.
