James William Peter Hirschfeld
James William Peter Hirschfeld (born 1940) is an Australian mathematician, resident in the United Kingdom, specializing in combinatorial geometry and the geometry of finite fields. He is an emeritus professor and Tutorial Fellow at the University of Sussex. Hirschfeld received his doctorate in 1966 from the University of Edinburgh with thesis advisor William Edge (mathematician), William Leonard Edge and thesis ''The geometry of cubic surfaces, and Grace's extension of the double-six, over finite fields''. To pursue further studies in finite geometry Hirschfeld went to University of Perugia and Sapienza University of Rome, University of Rome with support from the Royal Society and Accademia nazionale dei Lincei. He edited Beniamino Segre's 100-page monograph "Introduction to Galois Geometries" (1967). Projective Geometry
In mathematics, projective geometry is the study of geometric properties that are invariant with respect to projective transformations. This means that, compared to elementary Euclidean geometry, projective geometry has a different setting, projective space, and a selective set of basic geometric concepts. The basic intuitions are that projective space has more points than Euclidean space, for a given dimension, and that geometric transformations are permitted that transform the extra points (called "points at infinity") to Euclidean points, and vice-versa. Euler Medal
The Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications (ICA) is an international scientific organization formed in 1990 to increase the visibility and influence of the combinatorial community. In pursuit of this goal, the ICA sponsors conferences, publishes a bulletin and awards a number of medals, including the Euler, Hall, Kirkman, and Stanton Medals. It is based in Duluth, Minnesota and its operation office is housed at University of Minnesota Duluth.
