James Thornton (songwriter)
James Thornton (December 5, 1861 – July 27, 1938) was an Irish-American songwriter and vaudeville performer. He is primarily remembered today as the composer of the 1898 song, "When You Were Sweet Sixteen". Career Thornton started his career as a "singing waiter" in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, and then achieved success with his wife, Elisabeth "Bonnie" Cox, in music halls throughout the US as what was then called a "serio-comic" or "monologist" (essentially a stand-up comic) and singer. During his career, he also performed in a vaudeville team with Charles B. Lawlor. Jim Thornton is an American radio and television announcer and voice actor. He is known for his voiceover work in video games, movies and television shows. Since 2011, he is best known for being the announcer of '' Wheel of Fortune'' following the death of longtime announcer Charlie O'Donnell. Early life and education Born in Huntington, West Virginia, Thornton graduated from Huntington High School in 1983 and then moved to Los Angeles in 1984 where he started his broadcasting career a year later. He is best known for portraying John Barton on the long-running British soap opera ''Emmerdale'' from 2009 to 2012; he previously appeared in the show in 1995. James Innes Thornton (October 28, 1800 – September 13, 1877) was a prominent Alabama, USA, planter and politician. Early life Thornton was born on October 28, 1800, at Fall Hill near Fredericksburg, Virginia, to Francis Thornton IV and Sallie Innes. His father was a successful physician, politician and planter who was second cousin to George Washington and held great prominence in the local community. His mother was the daughter of a wealthy Scottish merchant who had arrived in Virginia around the time of the American Revolution. Thornton was largely educated by private itinerant educators who would reside at the Thornton family estate. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1820 and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, to practice law with his brother Harry Innes Thornton. James Johnston Thornton (November 24, 1816, in Highland County, Ohio – February 29, 1884 Guadalupe County, Texas) was a prominent military reconstruction judge, land developer, and quartermaster of the Union Army. He was also the uncle of famed businessman and philanthropist, George Washington Brackenridge, of San Antonio, Texas. Early years Thornton was a member of a pioneering Ohio and Indiana family that had migrated to the region from South Carolina over opposition to slavery. The Thorntons and related families were devout Scots-Irish Presbyterians and formed a supportive community on Rattlesnake Creek, Ohio. His parents, John and Mary Johnston Thornton, raised twelve children in central Ohio and were respected farmers in the local communities. He was the founding CEO of ClientEarth, a global non-profit environmental law organisation before moving into the non-executive role of President and Founder. James Richard Thornton (11 January 1861 – 1 March 1916) was an English cricketer. Thornton was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. He was born at Horsham, Sussex. Thornton made three first-class appearances for Sussex. He made his debut against the touring Australians in 1880 at the County Cricket Ground, Hove, while the following season he made a second appearance against Hampshire at the same ground. His third appearance came in 1883 against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's. In his three matches, he scored 73 runs at an average of 14.60, with a high score of 29. With the ball, he took a single wicket, that of Hampshire's Russell Bencraft. He died at Burgess Hill, Sussex, on 1 March 1916. James Worth Thornton (September 19, 1906 – February 6, 1983, Virginia) was an American businessman and scion of the politically and socially connected Thorntons of Indiana. Thornton was the son of Sir Henry Worth Thornton and Virginia Blair, daughter of banker and steel magnate George Dike Blair. Thornton also appeared in the journals of noted essayist Edmund Wilson.
