James Thornton (actor)
James Thornton (born 31 October 1975) is an English actor and voice-over artist. He is best known for portraying John Barton on the long-running British soap opera ''Emmerdale'' from 2009 to 2012; he previously appeared in the show in 1995. Personal life Thornton married the actress Joanna Page in December 2003. They have four children. Four years before their marriage, they both appeared in the BBC adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel ''David Copperfield''; he as Ham Peggotty, she as Dora Spenlow. On 13 February 2010 Thornton was hit by a motorist in London and received medical treatment for leg injuries. ''Emmerdale'' producers rewrote scenes involving Thornton's character. ''What's on TV'' is a weekly television listings magazine published by Future PLC. Overview ''What's on TV'' is a weekly UK television magazine. It publishes features, TV listings, news and gossip from soap operas, as well as puzzles and competitions. Its primary focus is on soaps and reality TV, but documentaries and dramas are also covered. It was launched in March 1991, after the monopoly on broadcast programming listings magazines ended and the market was opened up. Before this, only two TV magazines were available: '' Radio Times'' for BBC listings and ''TVTimes'' for ITV and, from 1982, Channel 4 listings. Among Giants
''Among Giants'' is a 1998 British film directed by Sam Miller and written by Simon Beaufoy. It is set in Yorkshire, and stars Pete Postlethwaite, Rachel Griffiths and James Thornton. The plot came about after Beaufoy was refused permission to make a documentary on electricity pylon painters in Pembrokeshire, and converted the idea into fiction. The script predates that of ''The Full Monty'', but only found a producer in the wake of the earlier film's success. The practicalities of shooting atop electricity pylons, not to mention insurance difficulties, meant that a safer mock-up pylon was made for the actors. This proved unconvincing: Postlethwaite remarked that "I don't believe we are up there, and if you don't sell that shot you don't sell the rest of the pylons," and so some material was re-shot on real pylons after training from Electricity Board climbing experts.
