James Rea Benson
James Rea Benson (January 21, 1807 – March 18, 1885) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Lincoln in the 1st Canadian Parliament as a Liberal-Conservative member until March 14, 1868, when he was named to the Senate of Canada for St. Catharines. He was born in Ireland in 1807 and came to Kingston in Upper Canada with his family in 1819. He later moved to St. Catharines, where he was a hardware merchant, also operating mills and ships in partnership with Thomas Rodman Merritt. Benson was president of the Niagara District Bank, the Welland Loan Company and the St. Catharines Gas Company. He served on the town council for St. Catharines and on the council for Lincoln County. He died in 1885 in Ottawa while still in office. The city of St. Catharines purchased his residence and used it for some time as the city hall. Benson married the daughter of Charles Ingersoll. Frederick William Benson
Major-General Sir Frederick William Benson, KCB was a Canadian-born British Army officer. Born into a prominent Canadian family, Benson fought in the Fenian raids as a teen, before proceeding to England to pursue a military career. A cavalry officer, Benson spent much of his early career in India, with the exception of a stint in England to attend the Staff College. Biography Early life in Canada Born at St. Catharines, Canada West, Frederick Benson was the son of Senator James Rea Benson by his wife, the daughter of Charles Fortescue Ingersoll and a niece of Laura Secord. He was educated at the Grantham Academy, T. B. Phillips' private school at St. Catharines, and Upper Canada College. Charles Fortescue Ingersoll
Charles Fortescue Ingersoll (September 27, 1791 – August 18, 1832) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts in 1791, the son of Thomas Ingersoll and younger half-brother of Laura Ingersoll (later Laura Secord). The family moved to Upper Canada in 1795. He began work as a clerk for merchants at Queenston. Ingersoll served as lieutenant in a troop of dragoons during the War of 1812. In 1816, he married Anna Maria, the sister of William Hamilton Merritt who was captain in the same unit and became Ingersoll's partner in business after the war. Ingersoll helped found the town of Ingersoll which he named after his father. With his brother James, he built a sawmill, gristmill, potash plant and distillery there, also establishing a general store and serving as postmaster. Lincoln County, Ontario
Lincoln County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was formed in 1792. In 1845, the southern portion of Lincoln County was separated to form Welland County. In some census and election records from the late 19th century, the townships of Caistor and Gainsborough (which can be seen on the map below) were enumerated as part of Monck County, while Grantham and Niagara Townships were enumerated as part of Niagara County. However, neither Monck nor Niagara ever existed as incorporated municipal counties, but rather as electoral districts. In 1970, Lincoln and Welland Counties were amalgamated to form the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
