James McLachlan (American Politician)
James McLachlan (August 1, 1852 – November 21, 1940) was an American educator and politician who served six terms as a U.S. Representative from California. Early life On August 1, 1852, McLachlan was born in Argyllshire, Scotland. McLachlan immigrated to the United States in 1855 with his parents and settled in Tompkins County, New York. McLachlan worked on a farm and attended the public schools. Education In 1878, McLachlan graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. McLachlan studied law. Career McLachlan was a teacher in the public schools. McLachlan was elected school commissioner of Tompkins County, New York, in 1877. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of New York in 1880. McLachlan practiced law in Ithaca, New York from 1881 to 1888. James McLachlan (Australian Politician)
James McLachlan (9 March 1871 – 1 December 1956) was an Australian politician. Born in Alma in the Mid North of South Australia, he was educated at Winham College before becoming a farmer at Dalkey near where he grew up. His parents James and Catherine, had both immigrated from Scotland. McLachlan married Ellen Louisa Jury in 1894 and abandoned farming in 1902 following a severe drought. After working as a storekeeper and agent, he was elected to the South Australian House of Assembly as the Liberal member for Wooroora in 1918, serving until 1930. His father had held the same seat from 1893 to 1902. He resigned on 31 January 1930 to take up an appointment on the Pastoral Board of South Australia. In the 1934 election, McLachlan was elected to the Australian Senate as a United Australia Party Senator for South Australia, taking the seat from 1 July 1935. James Douglas McLachlan (1869–1937) was the first British wartime Military attaché to Washington, D.C. Military career James Douglas McLachlan was born in Semarang, Java, 14 February 1869 and commissioned into the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders in 1891. He participated in the Nile Expedition in 1898 and, subsequently, at the famous Siege of Khartoum. He married Gwendolen Mab White, of Havilah, New South Wales in 1903 at St Margaret Church in London. As lieutenant colonel, McLachlan commanded the 1st Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in March 1913 and led it to France in the early stages of the World War I until September 1914, when he was wounded. He then commanded 8th Infantry Brigade (United Kingdom), 8th Infantry Brigade from October 1915 to March 1916. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (June 1916) and mentioned in dispatches twice (January 1916 and June 1916).
