James Harter
Major General James Francis Harter DSO MC (1888–1960) was a British Army officer who became colonel of the Royal Fusiliers. Military career Harter was commissioned into the Royal Fusiliers, after having graduated from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in October 1907. Harter served with his regiment in World War I, being wounded in 1914 and then, as a captain, being awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1918. The citation for the medal appeared in ''The London Gazette'' in July and reads as follows: Attending the Staff College, Camberley from 1924 to 1925, during World War II he commanded a formation in the North Midlands. He later served as colonel of the Royal Fusiliers The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) was a line infantry regiment of the British Army in continuous existence for 283 years. Major General (United Kingdom)
Major general (Maj Gen) is a "two-star" rank in the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank was also briefly used by the Royal Air Force for a year and a half, from its creation to August 1919. In the British Army, a major general is the customary rank for the appointment of division commander. In the Royal Marines, the rank of major general is held by the Commandant General. A Major General is senior to a Brigadier but subordinate to lieutenant general. The rank is OF-7 on the NATO rank scale, equivalent to a rear admiral in the Royal Navy or an air vice-marshal in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many Commonwealth countries. The rank insignia is the star (or 'pip') of the Order of the Bath, over a crossed sword and baton. In terms of orthography, compound ranks were invariably hyphenated, prior to about 1980. Staff College, Camberley
Staff College, Camberley, Surrey, was a staff college for the British Army and the presidency armies of British India (later merged to form the Indian Army). It had its origins in the Royal Military College, High Wycombe, founded in 1799, which in 1802 became the Senior Department of the new Royal Military College. In 1858 the name of the Senior Department was changed to "Staff College", and in 1870 this was separated from the Royal Military College. Apart from periods of closure during major wars, the Staff College continued to operate until 1997, when it was merged into the new Joint Services Command and Staff College. The equivalent in the Royal Navy was the Royal Naval Staff College, Greenwich, and the equivalent in the Royal Air Force was the RAF Staff College, Bracknell. Francis Rome
Major General Francis David Rome, (1905–1985) was a senior officer in the British Army who served as Commandant of the British Sector in Berlin from 1956 to 1959. Military career Rome was commissioned into the British Army in 1925. He transferred to the Royal Fusiliers in 1927. He served in the Second World War, latterly as commander of 111th Indian Infantry Brigade. After the war he became commander of 3rd Parachute Brigade in Palestine from 1946 and then commander of 1st Parachute Brigade in Palestine from 1947. He was appointed Assistant Commandant at the School of Land/Air Warfare in 1948 and Deputy Adjutant General at Far East Land Forces in 1950. He was then made General Officer Commanding 16th Airborne Division in 1953 and Commandant of the British Sector in Berlin in 1956; he retired in 1959.
