James Fearon (businessman)
James Sturgis Fearon was the Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council in from 1898 to 1899. Biography Fearon was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1849, the youngest son of Christopher Fearon and Grace Fearon. Fearon moved to Shanghai at the age of 21 in 1870. He joined the staff of Augustin, Heard & Co in the tea department. When that firm when out of business, he formed the firm of Fearon, Lowe & co with Mr E.G. Lowe. After Lowe's death he was joined in partnership by Mr Daniel and in 1880, Fearon, Daniel & Co was established. In 1900 he moved to New York City to run Fearon Daniel & Co's business there. He returned to China in 1910 and was principally based in Tianjin. He naturalised as an American in 1903. In his younger days, Fearon was an active member of the Victoria Company of the Shanghai Fire Brigade. History Of Shanghai
The history of Shanghai spans over a thousand years and closely parallels the development of modern China. Originally a small agricultural village, Shanghai developed during the late Qing dynasty (1644–1912) as one of China's principal trading ports. Although nominally part of China, in practice foreign diplomats controlled the city under the policy of extraterritoriality. Since the economic reforms of the early 1990s the city has burgeoned to become one of Asia's major financial centers and the world's busiest container port. Early Era Around 6000 BCE, only the western part of the Shanghai region encompassing today's Qingpu, Songjiang and Jinshan districts were dry land formed by lacustrine silting from ancient Lake Tai. The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China (PRC) launched by Mao Zedong in 1966, and lasting until his death in 1976. Its stated goal was to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. Frederick Anderson (footballer)
Frederick Anderson (17 November 1855 – 5 January 1940) was a Scottish football player and businessman in Shanghai and London. He served two terms as the Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council. Life and career Anderson was born on 17 November 1855 in Glasgow, Scotland, to James Anderson. He was educated at The Glasgow Academy. Anderson played as a forward for Clydesdale, Queen's Park and represented the Scotland national team once, in an 1874 friendly match against England. He scored Scotland's first goal in a 2–1 win. He also played in the first ever Scottish Cup Final, which his Clydesdale team lost 2–0 to his former club, Queen's Park in 1874. Anderson moved to Shanghai in the early 1880s to join Messrs Holliday, Wise & Co. At the beginning of 1890 he joined Messrs Ilbert & Co and by 1909 had become the principal partner of the firm. Albert Burkill
Albert Robson Burkill was the Chairman of the Shanghai International Settlement, Shanghai Municipal Council in from 1897 to 1898. Biography Burkill was born in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1839, the son of John Burkill. Burkill moved to Shanghai in the early 1866. He joined the staff of Glover, Dow & Co and some years later went into business on his own account. In 1877, he formed Cromie and Burkill with Mr Cromie and continued in partnership until 1895. In that year he formed A.R. Burkill & Sons with his sons C.R. and A.W. Burkill. He retired from business in 1898 and returned to England. A.R. Shanghai Race Club
The Shanghai Race Club was a horse racing club located in Shanghai, China. The Club was based at the Shanghai Racecourse (), and the two names are often used interchangeably. Originally the Race Committee of the International Recreation Club, the Race Club was first established in 1850, with the building of Shanghai's first racecourse. In 1862, it detached itself from the Shanghai Recreation Club to become an independent body. The Club's activities were affected by the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. After the Communist takeover of Shanghai in 1949, the Club was placed under military administration in 1951 and its properties taken over by the government in 1954.
