James Fanshawe
James Fanshawe is a British racehorse trainer. Horse training career He principally trains flat horses such as multiple Group 1 winner Soviet Song. However, he has twice won the Champion Hurdle: in 1992 with Royal Gait, previously a disqualified winner of the Ascot Gold Cup; and ten years later with Hors La Loi III. Fanshawe has also won at the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals with the J. P. McManus-owned Reveillez. He trains at Pegasus Stables in Newmarket. James Fanshawe (Royal Navy Officer)
Commodore James Fanshawe CBE (born 1953) is a retired Royal Navy officer. Fanshawe has been Chairman of numerous organisations since his retirement in 2005. Naval career Fanshawe joined the Royal Navy in 1970 and rose to the rank of Commodore, notably commanding HMS Hurworth, HMS Cleopatra, HMS Fearless, UK Task Group and the Devonport Flotilla. He was Commander of the Coalition Maritime Component in the Middle East and Director of Plans at Permanent Joint Headquarters. He notably planned evacuation and stabilisation operations in Sierra Leone in 2000 which were central to Operation Palliser; he also took control of several response operations immediately following the September 11 attacks in 2001. Fanshawe received CBE in 2004 but retired one year later, after 35 years of service. Fillies' Mile
The Fillies' Mile is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. History The event was established in 1973, and it was originally held at Ascot. It was initially sponsored by the Green Shield catalogue shops and titled the Green Shield Stakes. The shops were rebranded as Argos in the mid 1970s, and for a period the race was called the Argos Star Fillies' Mile. It was given Group 3 status in 1975. The sponsorship was taken over by Hoover in 1978, and the event became known as the Hoover Fillies' Mile. The Matron Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at Leopardstown over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September. History The event was formerly known as the Gilltown Stud Stakes, and it used to be held at the Curragh. For a period it was classed at Group 3 level. It was renamed the Matron Stakes in the mid 1980s. The race was transferred to Leopardstown in 2002. It was promoted to Group 2 status in 2003, and to Group 1 in 2004. It is now sponsored by Coolmore Stud, and its full title includes the name of Justify, a Coolmore stallion. Arctic Owl (horse)
Arctic Owl (29 March 1994 – 13 August 2021) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. A specialist stayer who was gelded before the start of his racing career, he won ten of twenty-five races between his June 1997 debut and September 2002 retirement. As a four-year-old in 1998, he emerged as a top class performer when he won four of his five races including the Prix Kergorlay and the Jockey Club Cup. He won the Henry II Stakes in 1999 and recorded his biggest victory in 2000 when he won the Irish St Leger. He remained in training until the age of eight when his career was ended by injury. Background Arctic Owl was a bay horse bred in Norfolk by John Greetham. His breeder was not impressed by the colt, and offered him for sale as a yearling in October 1995 at Tattersalls where he was bought for 10,000 guineas by the bloodstock agent John Warren on behalf of the trainer James Fanshawe. The Prix Jean Romanet is a Group races, Group 1 Flat racing, flat Horse racing, horse race in France open to thoroughbred Filly, fillies and mares aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles) at Deauville-La Touques Racecourse, Deauville in August. History The event is named in memory of Jean Romanet (1914–2003), a prominent figure in French racing. He devoted much of his life to the Société d'Encouragement, and served as general manager of the organisation from 1961 to 1986. The Prix Jean Romanet was established in 2004, and it initially held Group 2 status. It was one of several new races designed to keep more fillies from being exported or prematurely retired to stud. Invermark (horse)
Invermark (20 February 1994 – after 2002) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who excelled over extended distances. He showed modest ability in his early career and won only one minor race in his first two seasons. In 1998 however he made rapid progress as he took a minor event at Haydock Park before winning the Chester Stakes and then recording his biggest success in the Group races, Group 1 Prix du Cadran. In the following year he failed to win but arguably reached his peak with a second place in a very strong renewal of the Ascot Gold Cup and also finished placed in the Chester Cup and Prix Kergorlay. After being sidelined by injury for almost two years he returned to the track as a seven-year-old in 2001 to win another minor race at Haydock before running second in the Jockey Club Cup. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early October. History The event was established in 1974, and it was initially classed at Group 2 level. It was originally restricted to three and four-year-old fillies and contested over 1,850 metres. The race was opened to older mares in 1990. It was extended to 2,000 metres and promoted to Group 1 status in 2000. The Prix de l'Opéra was added to the Breeders' Cup Challenge series in 2011. The Sussex Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July or early August. History The first version of the event, a 6-furlong race for two-year-olds, was established in 1841. It continued intermittently for thirty-seven years, but it was uncontested on twenty-five occasions including fourteen walkovers. The Sussex Stakes became a 1-mile race for three-year-olds in 1878. The previous version had been overshadowed by both the Goodwood Cup and the Stewards' Cup, but in its modified form it became the most prestigious race at Goodwood. Frizzante (foaled 21 March 1999) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. A specialist sprinter, she improved from running in minor handicap races to win the Group One July Cup as a five-year-old in 2004. Background Frizzante is a bay mare bred and owned by Jan Hopper and Elizabeth Grundy and trained by Newmarket based James Fanshawe. She is a full-sister of the Listed race winner Firenze and half-sister of 2007 Stewards' Cup winner Zidane. Racing career Frizzante won one minor race at Doncaster Racecourse from three starts as a three-year-old in 2002. It is run on the July Course at Newmarket over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July.
