James Cuffe (died 1678)
Sir James Cuffe (died 1678) was an Irish politician. Biography The son of Thomas Cuffe of Somerset, he moved to Ireland with his father and brother in 1641. He served as Member of Parliament for County Mayo in 1661, as Master-General of the Ordnance in Ireland, and was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland in August 1676. He married Alice, daughter of Ambrose Aungier and his wife Griselda (Grizzell) Bulkeley, granddaughter of Francis Aungier, 1st Baron Aungier and Lancelot Bulkeley, Archbishop of Dublin, and sister of the first and second Earls of Longford. Their children included Francis Cuffe, ancestor of the Pakenham Earls of Longford; Gerald Cuffe, ancestor of Lord Tyrawley; Jane Cuffe, who married Sir Henry Bingham, 3rd Baronet; Alice Cuffe, who married James Macartney, and Lettice Cuffe, who married Francis Folliott. Sir Henry Bingham, 3rd Baronet
Sir Henry Bingham, 3rd Baronet (1654 – 5 July 1714) was an Irish politician and baronet. He was the eldest son Sir George Bingham, 2nd Baronet and his first wife, Anne Partiger. In 1682, he succeeded his father as baronet. Bingham was educated at the Middle Temple. From 1682 he was Custos Rotulorum of Mayo. In 1692, Bingham entered the Irish House of Commons for County Mayo, representing the constituency until his death in 1714. Cuffe Street
Cuffe Street (Irish: ''Sráid Mac Dhuibh'' or ''Sráid Cuffe'') is a street in Dublin, Ireland which runs from St Stephen's Green at the Eastern end to Kevin Street Lower at the Western end. History Cuffe Street was named after James Cuffe MP, and first appears on maps in 1728. On John Rocque's map of Dublin in 1756 it is Great Cuffe Street. The residential buildings built in the early 1700s were mostly gable-fronted houses, so-called 'Dutch Billys', which were largely modified in the later Georgian and Victorian periods. Many of these buildings were demolished when Cuffe Street was significantly widened in the 1980s to create a dual carriageway. Bricklayers' Hall 49 Cuffe Street for a period housed the headquarters of the Bricklayers' and Stonecutters' Guild. The building was originally constructed as the St Peter's Parish Savings Bank until its failure in the 1840s but the narrow building was later widened with an extra bay and separate door. James Macartney (died 1727)
James Macartney (1651/3–16 December 1727) was an Irish lawyer, judge and politician, notable mainly for presiding at the Islandmagee witch trial of 1711, which was apparently the last such trial in Ireland. Biography He was the eldest son of George Macartney, surveyor of Belfast, and his first wife Jane Calderwood; George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney, was descended from his younger brother. He entered Middle Temple in 1671 and the King's Inn in 1677. He sat in the Irish House of Commons as member for Belfast from 1692 to 1693 and from 1695 to 1699 and in 1701 was made second justice of the Court of King's Bench. He was removed from the Bench in 1711 due to his political allegiance but reappointed in 1714, and was transferred to the Court of Common Pleas the same year. James Cuffe, 1st Baron Tyrawley (1747 – 15 June 1821) was an Irish peer and politician. Life Cuffe's father was James Cuffe (died 1762), James Cuffe of Elmhall and Ballinrobe Castle and his mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Arthur Gore, 2nd Baronet and Elizabeth Annesley, and sister of Arthur Gore, 1st Earl of Arran. From 1768 until 1797 Cuffe represented Mayo (Parliament of Ireland constituency), Mayo in the Irish House of Commons. In 1776, he stood also for Donegal Borough (Parliament of Ireland constituency), Donegal Borough and in 1783 for Tuam (Parliament of Ireland constituency), Tuam, however, chose both times not to sit. He was created Baron Tyrawley on 7 November 1797 and was elected as one of the first representative peers for Ireland in 1800. The Board of Ordnance in the Kingdom of Ireland (1542–1800) performed the equivalent duties of the British Board of Ordnance: supplying arms and munitions, overseeing the Royal Irish Artillery and the Irish Engineers, and maintaining the fortifications in the island. Following the Acts of Union 1800, the Board was abolished and the duties taken over by the United Kingdom Board of Ordnance.
